SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 234,813, dated November 23, 1880.

Application filed July 21, 1880.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MAX RUBIN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fans, of which the following is a specification.

Figure 1 represents the fan opened. Fig. 2 represents the fan closed. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the lower part of the handles. Fig. 4 is an elevation showing how one side of the wing is connected with its handle. Fig. 5 is an elevation showing how the other side of the wing is connected with its handle.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to that class of fans in which the wing or web folds between two handles and opens into circular form when in use, and has for its object to make the fans more convenient in use and less liable to get out of order than fans constructed in the usual manner.

A represents the wing or web of the fan, which is folded in the usual manner, and the folds at one end are connected together and are secured to a pivot, B, the ends of which pass through the ends of the handles 0 D, and have wide circular washers E attached to the said ends to keep the said handles O D always parallel.

The outer folds of the wing A are attached to metal strips F G, the outer ends of which are connected with the pivot B by the fastenings that connect the ends of the folds with the said pivot B. The inner end of the strip F is secured to the shoulder of the handle 0 by a pin or screw so as to secure the said end in place. The inner end of the other strip, G, is connected with the shoulder of the other handle, D, by a short ribbon, H, to allow the outer end of the said strip G to move from side to side of the handle.

The handles 0 D have shoulders formed upon their inner sides at the ends of the folds of the wing A, to form a space between the said handles to receive the said wing A, and to allow the inner surfaces of the hand-pieces of the said handles to rest against each other, as

shown in Figs.2 and 3. The ends of the handpieces of the handles 0 D are fastened together, when the fan is closed and opened, by a tubular cap, I, slipped upon the said ends, one of the said ends being made a little longer than the other to allow the cap I to be drawn oif far enough to release the shorter end without withdrawing it from the longer end. The cap I is slotted longitudinally to receive the ring J, attached to the longer end of the handles U D, which thus serves to prevent the said cap I from being drawn off the said end.

Vith this construction the fan is opened and closed by drawing back the cap I and swinging one of the handles 0 D around the pivot B in a plane parallel with the plane of the other handle, the web A being arranged with the edges of the folds toward the handles 0 I). With this construction the difference in length between the handles 0 D may be more or less, as may be desired, the cap I being made of a corresponding length.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a folding fan, the combination, with the wing A and pivot B, of the handles 0 D, the longer one having a shoulder near the outer end, against which the other folds, as shown and described.

2. In a fan, the metallic strips F G, attached to the outer fold of wing A, and connected at the end with the pivot B, in combination with the handles G D, having shoulders to which the ends of said strips are connected, the strip F directly and the strip G by a ribbon, H, as and for the purpose specified.

3. The combination, with handles 0 D, one of which is shorter than the other and fits against a shoulder thereof, of the tubular cap I, held by slot and ring to the 'end of longer handle, but so that it can be drawn off the end of the shorter one, as shown and described. MAX RUBIN. Witnesses:
