Description
J. G. LARSON. POCKET KNIFE.
(No Model.)
Patented Nov; 21, 1893;
- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES ORISTIAN LARSON, OF APPLETON, MINNESOTA.
POCKET-KNIFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 509,228, dated November 21, 1893.
Application filed April 1, 1893- Serial No. 4631 (N o ell) To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JAMES CRISTIAN LAR- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Appleton, in the county of Swift and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket-Knives; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The present invention has for its object to provide a pocket knife that will be simple in construction and one that will enable the blade to be drawn out or extended to any length, eitherin part or the entire length of the blade as circumstances would require, and the invention consists in a pocket knife constructed substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure l of the drawings represents a perspective view of the knife showing the blade extended for use; Fig. 2 a horizontal section thereof; Fig. 3 a similar view showing the blade within the handle; Fig. 4 detail views in perspective of the lever and a portion of the knife-blade.
In the accompanying drawings A represents the handle of the pocket knife constructed of metal or any other suitable material and may be ornamental or plain as found desirable. The handle is hollow to provide a space for the reception of a blade B and a lever C and is open at its ends and has a slot at upon one of its sides which extends the entire length of the handle and through which the lever works. The lever O is constructed of steel or any other suitable metal, and has at one end a suitable thumb piece I) which extends outside the handle and may have corrugations as shown in Fig. 1, or otherwise roughened to form a better grasp for the fingers. Upon the opposite end of the lever is a stud c which engages a hole d in the heel e of the blade B which forms a pivotal connection between the blade and lever. At or near the center of the lever O isa pin f which engages with an open slot 9 on one side of the handle A to retain and lock the lever within the handle and also the blade B, or hold the blade in an extended position as shown in Fig. 1.
The lever C is slightly curved to give it sufficient spring to firmly and securelylock the blade in either position and thus guard against accident when the knife is in .the pocket or in the hand. There may be any desirable number of the slots g with which the pin f may engage so as to hold the blade extended at any suitable distance, either its entire length as shown or a portion thereof when it is found desirable to use a short blade. If desired the handle may have inwardly extended shoulders or flanges h at one or both 'ends to retain the lever within the handle and any suitably formed blade may be used as found desirable. The handle may be covered upon the outside with wood, bone, or any of the materials usually employed for this purpose, and may be of any suitable shape.
Should the blade become broken it can be readily and easily replaced by a new one, and when the knife is required for use the blade can be conveniently opened with one hand either with gloves or mittens on, and the simplicity of construction and the few parts necessary, renders itless liable to get out of order.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'
A pocket-knife consisting of a suitable handle having open ends and a longitudinal slot extending the entire length of the handle, one or more slots at right angles thereto, a spring lever having a pin to engage with the latter mentioned slots and having a thumb piece at one end, and a suitable blade pivoted to the lever, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES ORISTIAN LARSON. Witnesses:
HENRY O. MAXWELL, H. W. KooH.
