SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 509,198, dated November 21, 1893.

Application filed January 31, 1893- To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HENRY E. CLEMENT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Winooski, in the county of Chittenden and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knockdown Furniture; andIdo hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

The present invention has relation to that class of furniture known as knock-down furniture, or in other words, such as can be taken apart for convenience of packing, storing, or shipping, and the invention consists in certain improvements in all class of case work, whereby the parts when detachably connected together will be firmly held in place and when required readily disconnected and separated, as will be hereinafter described and subsequently pointed out in the claims.

Figure 1 of the drawings represents a bureau or otherpiece of case furniture showing a rear elevation thereof partly in section and with the back removed; Fig. 2 a vertical central section of Fig. 1 taken on line 00 at, showing the back also in section and disconnected therefrom. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of one of the front corners of the removable top; Fig. 4 a detail view in perspective showing one of the front corners and its interior construction, and one of the drawer supports slightly pulled back to show. the dowel pin and groove; Fig. 5 a detail sectional plan view of one of the front corners showing one of the drawer supports in position; Fig. 6 a detail plan view of one of the rear corners showing the back in position. shown a bureau as one of many forms of case work to which my invention may be applied, and it consists in part of the sides A which have upon their interior dove-tail grooves a which extend horizontally and suitable distances apart to receive the dove-tail tongues 12 uponthe side edges of suitable drawer supports B. The grooves a and tongues b as means of connecting the drawer supports to the sides of the casing are very simple as well as providing a firm joint that will give rigidity and strength to the parts when connected together, and admit of the sections being readily separated when required.

.In detaching and removing the drawer supports B the back 0 is first removed and then the supports slipped out from the rear side of the case.

The tongues and grooves may be formed upon the supports and sides of the casing as shown, or may be made separately of metal or wood and afterward connected thereto, as found most desirable.

The supports B for the drawers D, may be of any preferred construction as may also the drawers, the former having the dowel-pins c at their front edge near the corners, which pins enter the holes 01 in the flanges or front sections E, so as to provide additional security against any displacement of the supports when in position within the casing.

The back 0 has rabbeted edges f upon its inner side which edges overlap the edges of w the sides A of the casing, said back being detachably connected thereto by screws or other suitable means. The top F of the easing has upon its under side a frame Z of such size as to fit snugly wi thin the casing and rest upon the rabbeted edges 9 of the sides thereof. The frame .l' is cut away at its corners as shown at h and provided with dowel-pins 2' which enter holes is near the top of the front sections The back 0 is connected to the rear edge of the under portion of thetop F and the frame I of the top fits within the casing and is secured in place by the dowel-pins which will firmly and securely hold the top in position, and the several parts composing the piece of furniture readily and conven iently separated from each other, by first removing the back, as hereinbefore described.

In Figs. 7, 8 and 9 I have shown the front sections E with dove-tailed grooves m and at the corners and front edge of the drawer supports are dove-tails '21, whereby an additional security against displacement is provided and increased strength at the joint obtained, the dove-tails b n being at right angles to each other and cut away at theirj uncture as shown at 0.

Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A bureau or other piece of knockdown furniture having its sides formed with rabbeted top edges and dovetail grooves, front sections or flanges detachably connected to the sides, a top having a frame upon its under side fitting within the casing and resting upon the rabbeted edges, said top having dowel pins engaging the front sections, drawer supports having dove tails upon their edges fitting the grooves, and a back detachably connected to the casing and to the rear edge of the top and serving in conjunction with the dowel pins to hold said top in place, substantially as specified.

2. A bureau or other piece of knockdown furniture, consisting of a casing, a detachable top therefor having upon its under side a frame adapted to rest upon the rabbeted edges of the sides of the bureau-frame, a detachable back thereto, and drawer supports connected to the sides of the bureau-frame by dove-tail and grooves and having at their front corners a double dove-tail whose parts are at right angles to each other and cut away at their juncture as shown and for the purpose set forth.
