SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 265,373, dated October 3, 1882.

Application filed August 7, 1882.

To all whom it may concer/a:

Beit known that I, TIIEoPI-IILUs BILLING- TON, of Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Kitchell-Cabinets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a f ull, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specifica- A tion, and in which- Figure lis a perspective view of my'improved kitchen cabinet or cupboard, showing the shelves removed. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same with the shelves resting on their cleats. Fig. 3 is a section through one ofthe sides of the cabinet, showing the mauner of fastening the cleats on the front and back. My invention has relation to kitchen-cabinets or cupboards; and it consists in the improved construction of the same, as hereinafter more fully described, and set forth in the claim, by which the cabinet may be readily taken apart for shipping and again put t0- gether when desired for use.

In the accompanying drawings, the letter A represents the back piece of my improved knock-down 7 cabinet, which I prefer to make paneled, as shown in the drawings. the sides, and O C' C C'" the front, the parts of which are mortised together in the usual manner. This front should be provided with a hinged door of wood,- perforated metal, or wire-cloth stretched upon the frame to provide for the ventilation of the interior of the cabinet. The edges of the front and back pieces are grooved vertically, as shown at a, to receive the tongues b of the sides B, leaving a project ing ledge, c, as shown. The cleats, one of BBare (No model.)

which is shown at D, are made with flaring or wedge-shaped end pieces, d, adapted to beinserted into mortises of a corresponding shape, e, in the front and back. By this means the front and back will be irmly connected without the use of screws or any other fastening devices, which may, however, be used, if desired, as an additional means of strengthening the entire structure. The cleats are placed opposite to each other, so as to form bearings for removable shelves D', and I prefer to construct the uppermost pair of cleats with iianges d, which form guides for a drawer that may be placed in the top of the cabinet.

From the foregoing description, taken in con nection with the drawings, the advantages of this construction will he readily understood. By removing the cleats, which is easily done by a slight knock on their under side, the front and back are readily separated, freeing the sidepieces, B, so that the whole may be packed and shipped so as to'occupy a very small space. lt will also .he seen that the structure can be put together without use of screws or nails, and in a moment of time, when it has arrived at its point of destination.

Having thus described my invention, Iclaim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The knock-down cabinet or cupboard consisting of the grooved back piece, A, having dovetailed mortises e, front C C C" 0', provided with a removable hinged door, parallel grooves a, and dovetailed mortises c, tongued side pieces, B B, and removable cleats D, having Wedge-shaped end pieces, d, the whole constructed and combined substantially' as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
