MARTHA'P. GODMAN, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN DRINKING-CUPS FOR THE SICK.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 50,906, datedNovember 14, 1865.
To all whom it may concern? Be it known that I, ll/IARTHA P. OODMAN, of Boston, in the county of Suflolk, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Drinking-Vessel for the Sick; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention consists in providing a wineglass, cup, or other drinking-vessel having a partial covering over the mouth, with a tube in sucha manner that a sick person lying horizontally on the back can drink from it comfortably without raising the head.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and usem y invention, vI will describe its construction.
I make my drinking-vessel in any of the ordinary forms-as a wine-glass, cup, or tum- The example in the drawingis that tial covering, A, which closes about half of. the mouth of the glass. Into this partial covering A, I insert a tube, B O. This tube may be of various forms, but a curved one is preferable. I construct a cup, tumbler, or other drinkingvessel with a partial covering and tubein the same manner. The tube B O and partial covering A are made of the same material as the vessel itself, are permanently attached to it and to each other, and with it form but one piece of crockery or glassware.
The method of using this drinking-vessel is as follows: The glass orother vessel vcontaining asmall quantityof liquid, the end O of the tube B O, is prevented from spilling by the partial covering A, and is received into the mouth of the drinker throughthe tube B O.
The advantage of this drinking -vessel is that it enables persons too weak or illto raise the head to take medicine, tea, gruel, or other nourishing liquids with comfort. The use of the tube B 0 enables liquid to be taken into the month by a person lying on the back in small or large quantities at the pleasure of the drinker, with little effort, without spilling or danger of choking-objects which cannot be attained by the use of a glass having a partial covering and an aperture, but without atnbe.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The application of a tube to a driiiki'ng-vessel constructed with a partial covering, as described, in the manner substantially as de scribed.
MARTHA P. OODMAN.
