To It whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MELVIN G. FULLER, residing in Worcester, in the countyof Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Dies, of which the following description, in connection with the accompany-ing drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
My invention relates. to improvements in dies for cutting blanks of various shapes out of leather, rubber, pasteboard or'similar materials. I l r 1 The object of my invention is to provide a cutting die which will leave the blanks, when r 5 cut, with a beveled edge,that is, with the upper surface of each blank less in area than its under surface.
My invention consists in a cutting die, the inner wall of which near the cutting edge is beveled or inclined inwardly and is inclined outwardly above the plane in which the inwardly inclined bevel terminates, sufficiently to afford a clearance space through which the blank may pass through and outof the die as gasily and freely as out of an ordinary open My invention also consists in a cutting die, the outer wall of which,near the cutting edge, is substantially at a right angle tothe plane in which the cutting edge is situated, and the inner wall of which near the cutting edge is beveled or inclined inwardly, and is inclined outwardly above the plane in which the inwardly inclined bevel terminates sufficiently to afiord a clearance space for the purpose above described.
In ordinary cutting dies, the inner wall near the cutting edge is substantially at a right angle to the plane in which the cutting edge is situated, and the outer wall, near the cutting edge, is inclined outwardly. The edge of a blank cut out by such a die by reason of the beveled outer wall, is usually slightly less in area on its lower surface than on its upper 5 surface.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l, is a side elevation of a handle die for cutting heel lifts, embodying my invention.

A is the blade of the die, and B the handle.
0, c is the cutting edge of the blade and d the top, or as it is often called, the back of the blade. The outer wall of the die near the cutting edge upward fora distance 0, e, greater than the thickness of the material to be cut, is substantially vertical, that is, it stands at a right angle to the plane in which the cutting edge e, 0 lies. The inner wall, from the cutting edge upward, for about the same distance, c, f, is beveled, or inclined inwardly. The inner wall above the plane in which the bevel c, f, terminates, is inclined outwardly to the top or back of the die, and, in order to insure the strength of the blade with as little metal as possible, the outer wall from 6 to d is made about concentric with the inner wall from fto d; but the shape and dimensions of the outer wall from c to d are immaterial, so long as the strength of the die is notimpaired thereby. The area inclosed by the inner wall, at the top or back of the die should be equal to and preferably greater than the area at the cutting edge, to permit the free passage of the blanks.
I have shown the outer wall near the cutting edge as substantially at a right angle to the planein which the cutting edge lies, as, with this construction, the desired bevel on the edge of the blank can be more easily and certainly secured, but the bevel or inclination of the outer wall near the cutting edge may be as in ordinary dies, provided that the inner wall is constructed as above described. 85
In operation, as the cutting edge is forced into the leather or other similar material to r be cut, the blank, as it is being cut, is curved from its edges upwardly and inwardly toward the center of the blank, by reason of the bevel c, f. VVheu the next and following blanks are cut, the first blank will be forced up. above the level 0, f into the. enlarged, or clearance space f, cl, whence it may be readily removed by inverting the die, or'if the die is cut full of blanks, the first blank will be raised above the level of the back d,
and may be slipped out horizontally beneath the handle B. Each blank will be found to: be cutbeveling and will have a beveled,or, as it is sometimes termed a standing edge, a result which is desirable, especially insoles and heel lifts for boots and shoes.
Thedistance to which the bevel c, f,, shall extend is determined by the thickness and character of the material to .becut. 'In the case of sole leather, I have found it desirable to make it about equal to the average thickness of the leather.
I am aware that cutting dies have been heretofore made to cut blanks and leavethem with beveled or standing edges, but in all' such dies known to me, nopro'vision'has been made for clearance above the plane in which the bevel (corresponding too, f) terminates; and consequently when a blank was ,cut, itv was necessary to force it out from the die in the reverse direction from which it entered. This, it done by hand,,was, of necessity, slow, and, if done bya follower, asshowninzUuited States Patent No. 110,762, of Janua1y3,1871, required more force to operate the die than. is required with my improved die, inordento; overcome theresistance of the =springs which; actuated thefollower. When it is desired that the blank should have a beveled edge around its entire periphery, as in a sole die, the inwardly inclined b ve c, fwo ld b use l y- It is obvious that my improved die may be provided with a handle as shown in the drawings or may be actuated by a machine applied to the backofthe blade.
