PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE A. WHITE, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
DIE FOR CUTTING HEEL-LIFTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 243,185, dated June 21, 1881.
Application tiled April 23, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, GEORGE A. WHITE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suolk and State of lVIassachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Dies for Making Heel- Lifts and I do hereby declare that the same are fully described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying draw- Io ings.
This invention relates to improvements in making heel-lifts for boots and shoes; and it consists of an improved die t'or this purpose, which die is made long enough to/contain two or more heel-lifts arranged side by side, and wide enough for a single heel -lift, for which purpose the die is made with a straight-base cutting-edge bounded by right-angle cuttingedges, the upper ends ot' which are united by a concave-convex cuttin g-ed ge, or modification thereof, as will be further described.
Heretot'ore heel-lifts have been made by first stripping the hide in parallel strips, which have afterward been divided either in single heel-lifts cut out with a die for this purpose or divided by means ot` au angular knife in pairs of heel-lifts, one above thc other; but such method is objectionable, owing to the inequalities of the thickness ot the hide and its bagging or belly-ing shape, by which the strips cut therefrom are rendered very unequal in thickness and width, and consequently when the heel-lifts are* cut from such strips they cannot be produced ot' standard dimensions g 5 without waste of leather. By the use of my improved dies, in which two or more heellitt sections are arranged side by side, I obtain a long and straight cutting-edge on one side of the die, which serves as a guide to cut on a continuous straight line, and in this manner I am able to dispense with a lpreliminary stripping up of the hide in parallel strips or bands, and by cutting the heel-lifts from such parts only which are suitable for the purpose I am able to produce heel-lifts of standard dimensions and so as to leave the remainder ot' the hide uncut without any waste, so as to use it for other sole-leather parts for boots and shoes.
The invention i's fully represented in the ac- 5o companying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a plan view of my improved die. Figs. 2 and 3 represent modifications thereof; and Figs. 4, 5, and 6 represent dies of double the width shown respectivelyin Figs. 1,2, and 3.
In Fig. 1, the improved die is represented as composed ot' four sides-viz., a base or straight-guide cutting-edge, a, ofa length equal to the width of two or more heel-lifts, rightangle cuttin g-ed ges b b at the extreme ends of the cutting-edge a, and a concavo-convex cut- 6o ting-edge, c, uniting the -upper ends ot' the cutting-edges b b, as and for the purpose set forth.
The moditcation shown in Fig. 2is that the concavo-convex cutting-edge c in Fig. lis substitu ted for a saw-tooth cutting-edge, c', in said Fig. 2, and in Fig. 3 a continuous arched cutting-edge, c, is substituted for the cuttingedges c and c shown respectively in Figs. I and 2. o
Figs. 4, 5, and 6 show dies ot' twice the width of those shown respectively in Figs. l, 2, and 3. The dotted lines shown in the various iigurcs ofthe drawings indicate division-lines on which the continuous heel-lift blanks are di- 7'5 vided in pairs, located side by side preparatory to their being delivered or sold to the trade.
In using my improved die I dispense entirely with the operation ot' trimming or marking the hide to a straight edge, to serve as aA 8o guide for the workman in placing the die in a continuous straight line, as my dies have a straight-base guiding and cutting edge long enough to take in two or more heel-lifts side by side.
The improved diefor cutting heel-lifts, having a straight guide cutting edge, a, long enough for the width of two or more heel-lifts side by side, the rightangled cutting-edges I) 9o b, and concavo-convex cutting-edge c or its equivalent, in a manner and for the purpose set forth. 1
In testimony whereof I have affixed my sig-- nature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE A. WHITE.v
