NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. 4
WILLIAM E. eoonnrcn, or cAMPEnto, AND HARVEY i). REED, or NORTH ABINGTON,
MASSACHUSETTS.
DIE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 24, 1918.
Application filed March 26, 1917. Serial No. 157,356.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that we, WILLIAM H. Goon- RICH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Campello, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, and HARVEY D. REED, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Abington, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Dies, of which the following is a specificat1on.
This invention relates to improvements in dies and particularly to dies adapted to form the soles of boots and shoes.
The object of the invention is to provide a die having the form of a sole with a second die mounted within and adjustable transversely of said first named die, adapted to cut from said sole, at the heel portion thereof, the central portion of said heel, said out out portion constituting the top lift of the heel of the shoe, embodying said sole when the heel thereof is of such a taper (as with the military or French heel) that the top lift is much smaller than the base of the heel or the portion removed from the sole of one shoe, especially a mans shoe, may be used as the top lift on a shoe of smaller size or on a ladys shoe.
Another object of the invention is to provide novel means for attaching the inner die to the outer die.
A further object of the invention is to provide supporting means for the stripping devices of both of said dies.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a die embodying our invention.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
' Fig. 3 is a detail section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
In the drawings, 1 is a die having substantially the form of a shoe sole. The lower edge 2, entirely around said die, is beveled or sharpened to form a cuttingedg'e, while the upper edge 3 thereof is flattened and is the pressure edge of said die. A yoke 4 is disposed transversely of the heel portion 5 of said die 1 and is secured to opposite sides of said die, preferably by rivets 6, said yoke being disposed at a distance below the pressure edge 3 of the die. The rivets 6 extend through upwardly extending members 7 which terminate flush with the pressure edge 3 of the die and relieve the rivets 6 from the pressure applied thereto during the cutting operation.
A second die 8, preferably having the form of a heel top lift, is provided with a sharpened lower edge 9 which constitutes a cutting edge, said cutting edge 9 terminating in the same plane in which the cutting edge 2 of the outer die terminates. Lugs 10 project outwardly from the die 8 and are attached to the yoke 4 preferably by screws 11, which are arranged in holes 12 in said lugs, slightly larger than the screws 11, so as to permit a limited movement of the die 8 transversel of the die 1. The projecting portions of the screws 11 above the yoke 4 are provided with nuts 13.
Disposed centrally of the yoke 4, directly above the die 8, is an upwardly projecting member 14 which constitutes a backing for the inner die 8, said member 14 extending upwardly to the plane containing the upper edge of the die 3 and the extension 7 of said yoke, said plane representing the under surface 15 of a platen 16 of the press which supplies pressure to the die.
Spaces 17, 17 formed between the member 14 and the members 7, constitute recesses within which the nuts 13 and the projecting portions of the screws are arranged, and enable said screws and nuts to be easily adjusted. A stripper plate 18 is arranged to fit within the lower portion of the die'adjacent to the cutting edge thereof and is yieldingly' mounted relatively to said cutting edges so that when the die is brought down upon the piece of leather or sheet material sion 20 of the yoke 4 constitutes the brackets, Screws 21,. having countersunk-heads 22 arranged W1l3l1-= for the heel portion thereof.
in the stripper plate 18, extend upwardly 1n sliding engagement with the brackets 19 and extension 20 and have nuts 23 attached at their, upper ends, whereby said stripper plate may be adjusted vertically with respect to vthe cuttingedges of said die.
Springs 24,: are interposed between the plate 18 and said brackets and 'yieldingly retain the plate in its normalposition. The platel8 is recessed at 25 to permit the die 8 to protrude therethrough, said recess being larger than said die so as to permit a transverseadjustment of the die 8 relatively to the, die 1.
e To serve as a stripper for the die 8 a sec tion of, resilient material, preferably rubber 26, is inserted within said die substantially the wholelength, abutting against the under sideof; the, yoke 4, said rubber being recessed at 27, 27 topermit the transverse expansionthereof when pressure is applied to the lower end-duringthe cutting of the material. v I
With the I construction hereinbefore set forth, it will bepossible to utilize the sheet material or leather atthe center of the heel portion of the sole, asv a top lift for a heel where a good quality of leather isrequired, while an inexpensive fillingwill serve just as vwell to fill the hole so made, and permits said top lift to be cut from the leather simultaneously with the. cuttingout of the sole, saving'labor and givingthetop lift the accurate shape for useonthe heel.
Furthermore, by, providing the adjustments and detachable features of the inner die, different sizes of top lift dies may be attached to the sole dies and said top liftdie may beadjusted so as to cut the exact portion desired from the sole.
Having thusspecifically' described the invention-v what we claim. and desire by Letters Patent to, secure. is:
1. In combination, a die having the-form of a shoe sole, a yokedispo-sed transversely of and within theheel portion of said die and at a distance from the back edge,th ereof, a second'die, arranged 'in a predetermined position upon said yoke, the cutting edges of said dies terminating, in the same Plane.
.2. A cutting die having, in combination, a yoke disposed within and"transversely thereof at a distance from the back edge of said die, a second die attached to said yoke within said first named die, and means for adjustably securing said second die to said ore. y 8.
