LAST-HEEL.
Specification of Letters Pateiit.
Patented July I3, 1915.
Application led May 15, 1909. Serial No. 496,283.
T0 all w71 om 'it 11mg/ concern Be it known that I, lCowiN J. PRINDLE, of East Orange, in the county of Essex, and in the State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Last-Heels, and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description thereof.'
The object of my invention has been to provide a reinforcement for wooden heeled lasts which shall enable them to withstand having the heel driven on by a lieeling machine; and to such ends my invention consists in the last heel liei'einafter specified.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating .one embodiment of my invention, Figure l is a side elevation, partly in section, of a last embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2/2 in the direction of the arrows, and Fig. 3 is a planv view n of the heel portion of Fig. l.
In the manufacture of shoes it is customary to drivel the heel on the shoe at a single blow. driving all the nails which are to connect the lifts of the heel together` and to the sole at one time. This puts an enor- 'inous pressure upon the last heel. and no last heel in which the strain is-borne by the wood` as far as I know. previous to my last heel has been so constructed that it could stand the pressure repeatedly without giving way. I have conceived that if a metal or other strong support be formed in the cone of the heel with a. bearing surface on the wood of the heel of suilicient areaso that the wood is not crushed, and especially if the construction be such that the thimble1 hole shall be perpendicular to the heel plate of the last and at the center of the saine, the last will not crush. I have chosen to illustrate my invention. the embodiment thereof which is shown inn/.the drawings, but it is to plate to the top of the cone, which surfacev is suiiiciently large so that when properly supported it willnot be crushed by the compression of the heeling machine. Experience has shown that the'surface of.. should into a. hole a in the heel of the last, and preferably having front and rear enlargements aluand cl2 which bear upon the support of plate C. The contour of the last is filled out preferably by lifts of leather E which fit `over the thimble piece and/ lit down upon the said plate. Bolts F preferably pass through the said lifts and through the heel and are engaged by nut-s seated in recesses formed in vthe heel beneath the heel plate. I preferably put a liber cap G over the plate C so as to cover its edges and prevent any rust thereof reaching the lining of the shoe.
It will be observed that the strain upon the heel plate B is transmitted to the wood and by the wood is transmitted to the plate C, and if the said plate is placed low enough in the last so that its arca is sutliciently large. it will be able to support the wood without crushing into it. It will also be observed that while the thimble piece Sulliciently supports the plate, it is small enough so that it does not seriously add to the weight of the last.
As before stated, my invention is capable of other embodiments than the one illustrated, and I desire not to be limited beyond the terms of my claims and the necessary requirements of the prior art. I claim:
l.. A heel for lasts comprising ay wooden neel part, a heel plate on the tread face of said heel part, said heel part having a surface on the side thereof opposite to said plate of an area greater than half the area of said heel plate, a plate bearing upon said surface, a thimble, piece bearing upon the latter plate, and a filler disposed` about said thimble to lill out the foot-shaped contour of the heel.
2. A heel for lasts comprising a' wooden heel part, a heel plate on the tread face of 'said heel part, said heel part having a sui'- face on the side thereof opposite to said heel plate of an area greater than half the area sions adapted to support the latter plate, said thimble piece projecting through the y last mentioned plate into said heel part.
3. A heel for lasts comprising a Wooden heel part, a heel plate on the tread' face of said heel part, said heel part having a surpiep-e projecting through the last mentioned i' 'plate into the heel part, anda filling of liglrt material surrounding said thimble piece and l completing the contour of the heel.
viis
4. -A last having a heel comprising a wooden heel part, a heel plate on the tread face of said part, said heel part having ay surface on the side thereof opposite to said heel plate of an area greater than half the area of said heel plate, a plate bearing on l heel having a metal heel-plate substantially said surface, a thimble piece having forwardly and rearivardlv projecting extensions supportingr the latter plate, said thimble piece projecting through the last Imentioned plate into the heel part, a filling of light material surrounding saidthimble piece and completing `the contourof the heel, and bolts passing through said filling and said heel part and bearing on the sole i side of the heel part.
5. A last having a-Wooden heel part, said heel part being cut aivay-belonv the cone of the last to form a bearing surface of large area, a metal thimble piece having an eX- Copies of this patent may be obtained for tended bearing on said surface and diminishing in cross section toward its top, and a liller disposed about the thimble piece to lill out the foot shaped contour of the heel.
6. A last having a wooden heel part, said heel part being eut away below the cone 'of the last to form a larg'.- bearing surface, a metal member bearing on said surface and extending nearly to the sides of the foot shaped contour of the heel part, a-covering for the edges of said metal member", a thimble supported b vsaid member, and a filler disposed about the thimble to fill outthe foot shaped contour of the heel.
7. A last having a Wooden heel'part, a rey inforciflg plate set into said heel part below the top of the last and extending nearly to the sides of the foot-shaped contour of the heel part` and a non-metallic covering separate from said wooden part for the edges of 'said plate.
l 8. Ar heel for lasts comprising a wooden covering the entire heel and having a surface 'located sufiiciently below the cone of the last to provide an area larger than onehalf that of the heel-plate to prevent crushing into the wood by the hereinafter mentioned thimble piece, and a metal thimble piece adaptcd'to support said surface..
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have 'hereunto set mv hand.
