TOP PLATE FOR SHOE-LASTS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 12, 1916;.
Application filed August 5, 1916. Serial No. 113,350.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HAeor N. GHoroUnIAN, a subject of the Sultan of Turkey, residing at Bridgewater, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Top Plates for Shoe-Lasts, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improve ments in top plates for shoe lasts and it 1s an object of the invention to provide a plate of this general character with novel and improved means whereby the upper margins thereof are formed of compressible material so that the possibility of injuring a shoe when being removed from the last is substantially entirely eliminated.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a top plate for shoe lasts which serves to effectively save the heel portion of a last from breaking and cracking when pounded upon by therlasting machine, said top plate serving to balance the pressure imposed upon the heel portion.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved top plate whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view partly in section and partly in elevation illustrating a shoe last provided with a top plate constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a view in top plan of my improved top plate, detached; and Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken through the plate as illustrated in Fig. 2.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, H denotes the heel portion of a last having coacting with its cone or top the plate 1 provided with the jack tube or thimble 2 for purposes which are well known. The plate 1 has its upper or outer side portions and rear reduced or rabbeted as indicated at 3, and said reduced portion is provided with a filler l of leather or other compressible or pliable material which is pref erably secured to the plate 1 through the medium of a suitable adhesive. By having the filler 4L positioned as before described it will be perceived that the lining of a shoe upper is effectively protected against injury when the shoe is being removed from the last. lVith the top plate as generally employed it often occurs that upon the removal of the shoe the lining of the uppers are often torn or cut by the plate. It is also to be observed that the plate 1 is provided at its transverse center with the longitudinally spaced openings 5 through which screws or other fastening means are adapted to be passed in order to effectively anchor the same upon the heel portion of the last. From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a top plate constructed in accordance with. my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be-assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from th principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice, except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a top plate for a shoe last having the outer portions of its sides and rear rabbeted, and a filler of compressible material seated within said rabbet.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a top plate for a shoe last having the outer portions of its sides and rear rabbeted, and a at the sides and rear thereof are rendered filler of leather seated Within said rabbet. yieldable. .L L
8. In combination with the heel portion In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my of a last a plate overlying the cone of said signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
heel portion, the sides and rear of said plate HAGOP N. CHOPOUR-IAN. remote from the heel portion being rabbeted, Witnesses:
and a compressible filler seated Within said ANNIE M. TERTZAG,
rabbet whereby the outer edges of said plate JACOB K. TERTZAG.
