A To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOSEPH J AUOI-I, of Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented new Improvements in Lamp-Burners; and-I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with accompanying drawingsand the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of, this specification, and represent, lI1-- Figure l, a view in elevation of a burner constructed in accordance with my invention and applied to a lamp-fount; Fig. 2, a similar view looking at the end of the key, and with a portion of the skirt of the burner broken away; Fig. 3, a detached view of the burner with its gallery lifted and supported by the operating-hooks; Fig. 4, a view of the burner in transverse section on the line 0c 0c of Fig. 3; Fig. 5, a broken view of the burner in vertical section on the line yy of Fig. 3, with the gallery depressed; Fig. 6, a detached reverse plan view of the burner.

My invention relates to an improvement in that class of lamp-burnersin which the chimney-holder or gallery is arranged to be raised and lowered by a key, for convenience in applying a lighted taper to the wick, the object being to produce. a simple, and convenient burner of the type described.

With these ends in view, my invention consists in a lamp-burner having a detached gallery, a skirt, and an outer wick-tube, two vertically slotted guides depending from the said gallery, a key having hearing at opposite points in the said skirt, passing through the said guides, and bowed to clear the said tube, and lifting-hooks attached to the said guides, and engaging with the bowed portion of the ke l S ly invention further consists in certain details of construction and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.

In carrying out my invention, I employ a burner having a detached gallery A, of ordinary construction, a perforated skirt B, and an outer wick tube 0, which is connected at its lower end with the lower end of the skirt, the same being thereto turned inward to form 7B, in the ordinary manner.

A keyF, preferably consisting of a long piece of wire bent into the required form, has bearing in the upper edge of the skirt at opposite points therein, the upper edge of the skirt being thereto notched, as at b b, to receive the key, and the said notches being covered overwith little plates G G whereby the key, is retainedin place. If desired, however, the

said key may be struck out of sheet-metal or bent into form from a strip of that material, or-it might be cast. The said key passes through the slots D, of the said guides, and is outwardly bowed, as at F, to clear the outer wick tube C, its said bowed portion being constructed with bends or jogs F F for engagement by the outer ends of operatinghooks H H, the lower ends'of which are bent outward at a right angle, as at H H, and rigidly secured to the inner faces of the guides D D, at points thereon just below the ends of the slots D D'. The extreme outer end of each book has an inclined retaining face h, which whenthe gallery is lifted, engages with the adjacent bend or jog F of the bowed portion F of the key, as shown by Fig. 3 of the drawings, and sustains the gallery in its elevated position, so that the fingers may be removed from the key. A very slight movement of the key, however, serves to throw the bends or jogs of the same below the saidjinclines of the hooks, so that the gallery may settle back to its normal position.

For raising the gallery of the burner for applying a lighted taper to the wick, the key is turned in the right direction for raising its bowed portion, the jogs or bends whereof then lift against the operating-hooks which are thus raised, and hence the gallery. Then when the said bends pass under the retainingfaces of the hooks, the bowed portion of the key is looked, as it were, in an elevated position in which it supports the gallery. To lower the gallery the key is turned reversely until the bends of its bowed portion pass the said faces of the hooks, after which the gallery drops back by gravity into its depressed position. By preference the last movement of the gallery is controlled by keeping the fingers on the key and resisting the movement thereof, so that the gallery will go back into its place gradually.

It is apparent that in carrying out my invention 1 may make some changes in the construction herein shown and described. I would therefore have it understood that I do not confine myself to the same in its exact form, but hold myself at liberty to make such changes and variations therein as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A lamp-burner having a detached gallery, a skirt, and an outer Wick-tube, two vertically slotted guides depending from the said gallery, a key having bearing in the said skirt at opposite points therein, passing through the said guides, and bowed to clear the said tube, and operating-hooks attached to the said guides and engaging with the bowed portion of the key, substantially as described.

2. A lamp-burner having a detached gallery, a skirt, and an outer wick-tube, two vertically slotted guides depending from the said gallery, a key having bearing in the said skirt at opposite points therein, passing through the said guides, and bowed to clear the said tube; and operating-hooks secured at their lower ends to the inner faces of the said guides at points just below the slots thereof, substantially as described.

3. A lamp-burner having a detached gallery, a skirt, and an outer wick-tube, two vertically slotted guides depending from the said gallery, a key having bearing in the said skirt, passing through the said guides, and bowed to clear the said tube, and operating-hooks attached to the said guides, and constructed at their ends with inclined retaining faces to co-operate with the bowed portion of the key in sustaining the gallery in its raised position, substantially as described.

4. A lamp-burner having a detached gallery, a skirt and an outer wick-tube, two vertically slotted guides, depending from the said gallery at opposite points therein, and passing at their lower ends through guide-ways formed to receive them in the said skirt, a key having bearing in the said skirt at opposite points therein, passing through the said guides, and bowed to clear the said tube; and operatinghooks attached to the said guides, and engaging with the bowed portion of the key, substantially as described.
