Description

(No Model.) 4 G. E. OLIVER.
CHIMNEY HOLDER FOR LAMP BURNBRS.
No. 366,867. Patented July 19, 1887.
ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE E. OLIVER, OF MAGOG, QUEBEC, CANADA.
CHIMNEY-HOLDER FOR LAMP=BURNERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 366,867, dated July 19, 1887.
Application filed November 5, 1886. Serial No. 218,103.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. OLIVER, of Magog, in the Province of Quebec and Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and Improved Chimney-Holder for Lamp-Burners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to chimney-holders; and it consists of a novel form of chimneyholding attachment that is applicable for use in connection with the ordinary form of petroleum or kerosene lamp burner, as will be hereinafter explained, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a central sectional view of an ordinary form oflamp-burner arranged in accordance with the terms of my invention, the chimneyholding' attachment being shown as it appears when the movable finger is thrown back to release the chimney. Fig. 2 is a side view of the burner and a portion of the chimney, which said chimney is shown in section, a portion of the burner being broken away to disclose the arrangement of the chimney holder. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line a; x of Fig. 2, the chimney, however, being removed. Fig. 4 is a detailed perspective view of the movable retaining-finger; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the manipulating attachment, representing it as it appears when the movable retaining-finger has been advanced half-way to the chimney.
In the drawings, 10 represents the body, 11 the dome, 12 the wick-tube, 13 the wick-raisers, and 14. the spindle of the wick-raisers, these parts being of the ordinary and wellknown construction. Two or more upwardlyextending fingers, 15, are rigidly connected to the burner-body 10 just inside of the chimneysupporting flange 16, while a single movable finger, 17, is connected to the burner body by means of a link, 2, which link passes through appropriate apertures formed in the said burner-body, and also through lugs 3, that are formed at the base of the finger 17. The finger 17 is provided with a bearing-plate, 4, and in mounting the finger this plate 4. is arranged (No model.)
so that it will extend inward over the spindle 14..
A manipulating-lever, 18, that is provided with an ear, 5, is mounted in a position so that when the lever 18 is moved to the position in which it is shown in Fig. 3 its ear 5 will bear against the under face of the bearing-plate 4-, thereby elevating said plate and forcing the finger outward in the direction of the arrow shown in connection therewith in Fig. 1.
In practice I prefer to form the lever and its ear of a single plate of metal that is stamped to form, this plate being provided with two lips, 6, that are arranged to be thrown over and brought in close contact with the spindle 14., as clearly shown in the drawings.
In operation the chimney is placed upon the flange 16, the finger 17 having been first moved to about the position in which it is shown in Fig. 1, the ear 5 beingat this time in a hori zontal plane and the lever 18 in about a vertical plane. After the chimney has been placed in the position describcd, thelever 18 is moved up to a horizontal plane, and as the lever 18 is so moved the ear 5 will be carried to a ver tical plane and will raise the bearing-plate 4-, the parts at this time being about in the position in which they are shown in Fig. 3.
By connecting the lever with the spindle of the wick-raiser, as above described, I am able to provide for amanipulation of the chimneyholding attachment by simply raising or lowering the lever, the parts being so adjusted that by raising the lever the ear 5 will be carried to a vertical position and when the lever is thrown downward will be carried in a reverse direction, so as to permit the movable finger to fall to the position in which it is shown in Fig. 1.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with a burner provided with two or more fixed fingers, of a movable finger provided with an inwardly-projecting portion and a lever for engaging the inwardlyprojecting portion of the said finger to lock the latter in position, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with a burner, of two or more fingers fixed to the body thereof, a
thrown into contact with the bearing-plate of the movable finger, substantially as described.
4. The combination, with a burner, of fixedv fingers 15, a movable finger, 17, formed with a bearing-plate, 4:, and ap'ertured lugs 3, a link, 2, by which the finger 17 is attached to the 1amp-body, a lever, 18, formed from a blank upon which there are also formed lips 6 and an ear, 5, said lips being arranged for engagement with the spindle of the wick-raisers, while the ear 5 is arranged to be thrown into contact with the bearing-plate 4, substantially as described.
