SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 508,348, dated November 7, 1893.

It consists in the various features of improvement more fully pointed out in the claims. v

The letter c, represents the upper sash provided with sash bolt a, or snacket a,that engages the frame b, while c', c, are the lower hinged sashes. Y At-the top, the sash c, is provided with a pair of buttons f, g, to which are attachedstrings s, s', passing through suitable eyes on the frame b, and adapted tosbe secured at they lower end to a button k. To the side rails of sash c, there are secured the eyes d, engaged by the inner ends of bent rods e, the outer ends of which are received by corresponding eyes d', secured to frame b. (See Figs. 21 and 22.)
To open the sash c,thebolt a, is disengaged and the strings s, s released from knob la. This will cause the sash c, to be lowered by its own weight and to swing outward at its lower end, to assume the position shown in Fig. 5. The outer bent end (Fig. 21) of rodV e, striking against the eye-forming plate, prevents the sash fromr dropping down beyond the pre-determined point.
A curtain r, secured to the upper rail of the window frame will overlap the upper edge of sash c, so that the air is admitted at the bottom but excluded at the top.
To reverse the sash c, a knob q, Fig. 5, is
pressed toward the frame, which will cause the sash to tilt on its rod e, and toassume the position shown in Fig. 6, where the air is admitted at the top but excluded at the bottom. In Figs. 27 and 30 the inner end no', of bar e, prevents the sash c, from dropping.
In Figs. 7 to 10 and 23, 24 and 2S, a pin d2, secured to the sash c, is engaged by the elongated slot of-a bracket e', attached to frame b. The sash may readily be tilted in either direction and is open` when the pin occupies the forward end of the elongated slot.
In Figs. 11 to 14 and 25, a screw hook e2, engages the eye d, secured to sash c.-
In Figs. 19, 26 and 26, the hook e2, terminates in an eye e3, that engages a screw pin c4, inserted into sash c. l
In Figs. 15 to 18, 20, 29 and 29a, a lower band @has been added for receiving a pin m2;
projecting from the lower end of the sash.
The band p, may either be plain as in Fig. 29a,
or provided with a set of seats p', as in Fig. 29, for locking the sash in various positions.
InFig. 19a the upper edge of the sash is shown to be provided with a laterally projecting pin m, engaging a groove of frame h, and which is used to hold the sash to the frame.' This construction is used when the rabbet is of such a form as not to perform this function.
What I claim is- 1. In a window or door frame, the combination with the swinging sash c, having its upper and lower ends free to swing in and ont of said frame, a pair of arms projecting from the window frame to which the sash is piv- IOO otally secured, anda pair of operating cords, one end of each being attached to the upper rail of the sash,and the other ends of which are attached tothe window frame, one of said cords being adapted to raise the sash in its closed position, while upon releasing the other the sash will be lowered r or opened by its gravity, substantially as described.
2. In awindow or door frame, the co1nbina sion of the sash c, operating ropes s, s', apair of arms projecting from the window frame to which the sash is pivotally secured, and a rolling curtain fastened to the upper part of the window frame, the vfree-end `of saidcur-i tain being detachably secured to the sash, substantially as described.
3. The combination of sash c, with ropes s, s', arms for pivotaily connecting the same to the window frame and with a baud p, for receiving the lower end of the sash, substantially as specified.'
