Description

JOHN n cRAMER, or SANFRAINcisoo, CALIFORNIA.
Letters datent No.75,249, dated .Marck 10, 1868.
IMPROVED DEVICE FOR RAISING AND LWERING WINDOW-SASH.
clin-gagnait tirantl tu iii tigen eine @that mit making mnt nf tlgetzrme.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CON'CERN Be it known that I, JOHN DJ RAMER, of San Francisco, countyoi` San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improved Device for Raising and Lowering the Upper Sash to Windows; and Ido hereby vdeclare the following description and accompanying drawings are sulicient to'enable any person skilled in'the art or-science to which it most nerlyappertains' to make and use my said invention or improvements without further invention or experiment,
The nature of Ymy invention isto provideA an improved device for-raising and lowering the upper sash tov windows, more especially those windows composed of one light orpane of glass, known asplateglass.. To dol this, I cnt an'opening or slot midway in the upper or transverse part of the sash, over which is placed a plate having an opening large enough to admit the end of a rod or pole,y curvedat its upper end, and having a dat vertical plate attached toit. Referring to the accompanying drawings, to more fully illustrate and describe my invention- Figure 1 isa front elevation'of a window.
Figure 2 is a side view.
In the centre ofthe front or top part of the upper sash, at A, I make a slot or opening, A', and pla'celover it a slotted plate, B, the opening in which may be a little smaller than that of the hole in the sash. Great care should be taken to make the opening inthe-frame, and place the plato with the slot in it exactly in the centre of the sash, where it is attached, so that it will ba ance the window when it is rais-ed and lowered, and not bind against the sides of the frame.
In order to open and close the window, employ a stick, pole, or rod, 0,ot` suiiicient length, so that a person standing on'the door can perform the operation without reaching high, and place in theend o f it a cnrivedppieco of metal, c, havinga vertical flat plate, D, so that itwill easilyvt into the opening in xthe sash, passing through -the slot in the plate, and be loosely held by it, when, by laying hold of the pole or rod, and pulling' down' upon it, theupper sash is lowered, when the stick is removed, and placed in a corner of the room, to be used in closing the window, which is done by simply placing the end of it in the opening and pushing upward..
Byrthismeans, a ready article is at hand for opening and-closing windows without recourse to stools and chairs, and thedanger of pullingoiluthe lower pcrtionof the sash, or loosening itsfastenings, isavoided, as well as the liability of breaking the glass, for want of some place to get hold of, as where single panes or plateglass is used, and the window binds alittle on"'the sides ofthe frame, in which case great strength is oftem necessary to be exerted at a great disadvantage,as no reliable hold can be obtained; but by the use ofthe rod and hook, above described, the operator is in no danger of injuring himself or the window.
Having thus described my invention, what I claimfanddesire-to secure by Letters Patent, is i The combination and arrangement of the several parts of my device, namely, the, recess A, with the slotted plate B and the plate D, connected to the stall' 'G by theeurved piece c, substantially as described.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set myv hand and seal.
