THREAD-UNWINDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 508,166, dated November 7, 1893. Application filed July 9,1890- Serial-No. 358,123. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES H. COWAN, of Stonington, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut; have invented a new and useful Improvement in Thread-Unwinders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention is more especially applicable to machinery for doubling silk and other fibrous materials but may also be used in other machinery in which thread has to be unwound from a bobbin.

I will proceed to describe the nature of the improvementwithreferencetotheaccompanying drawings andwill set forth its novelty in a claim.

Fig. 1 represents a vertical central sectional view of a thread unwinder embodying my invention and a side view of a bobbin therein. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the thread unwinder and a bobbin therein.

Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in both the figures.

E F designate a stand consisting of a base E and a series of upright standards F, preferably three as shown in Fig. 2, cast thereon, the said standards being arranged in a circle concentric with a hole 1' provided in the center of the base for the reception of a central pivot or projection 01 provided at either end of a bobbin, the base by reason of said hole constituting a seat in which the bobbin is centered to keep it concentric with a ring G which is held within and supported by the standards F. This ring G is like the rings commonly employed in ring-spinning machines and receives a traveler a through which thread is drawn to be unwound from the spool D, without turning the latter, the traveler being caused to revolve around the said ring by the draft on the thread. The said ring G is made with a shoulder e to rest upon the tops of the standards F, the upper parts of the inner faces of which are bored or turned out concentrically with the bobbin seat E to form a seat for the said ring, receiving between them that part of the ring below the shoulder e, which part is made of such diameter that it will fit so tightly into or between the said standards as to be retained firmly therein by the elasticity of the casting. It will be understood that the base having in it a seat for centering the bobbin and the standards onsaid base being arranged in a circle around said seat and containing within themselves a second seat for the ring which is concentric with the first mentioned seat, the bobbin and the ring are rigidly and infallibly maintained in proper concentric relation the one to the other.

What I claim as my invention is The combination with a ring and traveler, of a bobbin stand consisting of a base form- 'ing a seat for a bobbin and a series ofstandards on said base arranged in a circle around said seat and having formed within them concentric with said seat a second seat for receiving the ring and maintaining it in concentric relation with the first mentioned seat, substantially as herein set forth.
