UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEs ELI E. HENDRICK, OF CARBONDALE, PENNSYLVANIA.
BOBBIN.
- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 651,625, dated J` une 12, 1900.
Application filed May 11,1899. Serial No. 716,350. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, ELI E. HENDRICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Carbondale, in the county of Lackawanna, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new'and useful Improvements in Bobbins, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates to various new and useful improvements in bobbins; and the objects of the invention are to reduce the weight of such bobbins, increase the strength thereof, improve the efliciency, and reduce the cost of manufacture.
My invention relates to the type of these devices known as hollow bobbins, wherein lightness is secured by employing bodies formed of relatively-thin shells; and the invention particularly relates to improvements in the manner of connecting the heads of such bobbins in position.
In carrying out my invention I employ a hollow body constituting a relatively-thin shell and into each end of which a disk-like head is screwed, displacement of the head being prevented by the employment of a key cooperating with the head and body and which prevents the accidental unscrewing of the parts. Preferably the hollow body is screwthreaded on the interior of its ends, and each head is provided with a screw-threaded neck engaging the screw-threads of the head. Preferably, also, each head is provided with an annular groove concentric to said neck and into which each end of the hollow body is received, whereby a very strong and light device will be secured.
In order that the invention may be better understood, attention is directed to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a vertical sectional View of my improved bobbin provided with heads formed of fiber or similar light and strong material; Fig. 2, a plan thereof; Fig. 3, a vertical sectional view'of my improved bobbin provided with wooden heads; Fig. 4, a plan thereof; Fig. 5, a vertical sectional view of my improved bobbin provided with heads made of fiber or similar material and with separate body, as shown.
tively-thin hollow shell having a central bearing 2 formed on the interior thereof, as is common.` The ends of the body l are screw-threaded at 3A 3, as shown, and these screw-threadsare formed, preferably, on the interior of the ends of the body.
4 4 represent the heads, which in Figs. l and 5 are formed of fiber or some other very strong and light substance. Vhen the body l is provided with screw-threads 3 on the interior of its ends, each head 4 will be provided with an'integral neck 5, having screwthreads 6, which engage with the screwthreads 3, whereby the heads 4 4 may be screwed tightly in place. In the preferred arrangement each head is also provided with a groove 7, concentric with the neck 5, and into'which groove will be seated the adjacent end of the body l, whereby any tendency of the body to split and become separated from the heads will be overcome.
In order to prevent accidental displacement of the heads 4 4, I employ at each end a pin S, made of wood or metal and which is seated in the hole formed in the head and This hole is formed after the heads have been screwed in place.
The arrangement shown in Fig. 3 is substantially like that illustrated in Fig. 1, except that instead of employing heads 4 4, of ber or similar material,I make use of wooden heads 9 9, which are preferably provided with the integral extensions 9 9 for the reception of the spindle on which the bobbin turns.
Bobbins of the construction shown in Figs. 3 and 5 are adapted for use in those mills which at the present time make use of wooden bobbins and wherein considerable length is necessary.
The construction shown in Fig. 5 is similar to thatshown inl Figs. l and 2," except that the fiber heads 4 are provided with separate bushings lO l0, screwed in place in said heads and which constitute the upper and lower bearings for the spindle.
The bushings lO are prevented from be4 coming unscrewed by pins ll, which correspond in their construction and function with the pins S.
My device, it will be observed, can be coustructed very cheaply, will bc very strong in use, and extremely light,
Having no'w described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:
l. As a new article of manufacture, animproved bobbin, comprising a hollow body, a head having fora part only of 4its depth serewthreaded connections with each end ol said body, and a pin passing directly through each head for preventing the displacement of each head, substantially as set forth.
2. As a new article of manufacture, animprovcd bobbin, comprisingahollow body, the ends of which are interiorlyscrew-threaded, a head having a screw-threaded neck, engaging the screw-threaded ends of said body, and a pin engaging the screw-threaded portion of each h ead and'body for preventing displacement of the heads, substantially as set forth.
As a new article of manufacture, an improved bobbin, comprising a hollow body, a head havi n g screw-threaded connections with each end of said body, a pin 'for preventing the displacement of cach head, and a bush ing screw-threaded into each head and in-V dependent of the body, substantially set forth.
L As a new article of manufacture, an i1nproved bobbin, comprising a hollow body, a head havingscrew-threaded connections with each end of said body, a pin for preventing the displacement of each head, a bushing screw-threaded into each head and independent of the body, and a pin engaging thebushing and head for preventing the displace ment of the former, substantially as set forth.
This specilication signed and witnessed this 9th day of May, 1899.
ELI E. ITENDRICK.
