Description

T. H.5ANDERSON. COMBINED PIPE WRENCH AND CUTTER. No. 508.077.. Patented Nov. 7, 1893.
(No Model.)
UNITED STATES.
TILLMAN H. ANDERSON,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF SPENCER, INDIANA.
COMBINED PIPE WRENCH AND CUTTER.
SPEGIFIGATIONforming part of Letters Patent No. 508,077, dated November 7, 1893.
Application filed June 16, l 893. Serial No. 477,871. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, TILLMAN H. ANDERSON,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Spen-.
cer, in the county of Owen and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Pipe Wrench and Cutter; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the wrench and cutter; and its objects are hereinafter more fully described.
I attain the ends by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying .drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a wrench'constructed according to the principles of my invention. Fig.2 is a central, longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse, sectional elevation of the pivoted jaw on the line 11 of Fig. 2. Fig.4 is a detail end view of said jawshowing the position of the parts when the cutter is in use; and Fig. 5, is a similar view showing the cutter not in use.
The same designations indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
A represents the handle of an angular headed wrench B, provided on its upper face with a series of teeth S, and on the adjacent face thereto, with a gage W. A jaw 0 slides on said wrench coaxially therewith and is provided with integral bearings E wherein the jaw G is pivotally suspended by pin F. The jaw G is provided at its rear end with a dentated are T adapted to mesh with the teeth S of the wrench, whereby the altitude of said jaw is varied. The forward end of the jaw G is rigidly held in the casing D which is variably adjustable thereto by means of the wing screw I and spring J, slots cut in the sides of the casing D serving to permit its vibration on the termini of the pin V. The
upper end of the jaw G is recessed to accommodate the motions of the cutter U in its respective positions of utility and inutility; and the sides of the slot so formed are serrated at H to grasp the pipe. From the inner ends of the casing D curved arms K, dentated at L, project adapted to pass through slots formed in a projection X on the jaw O, engaging thus the spring-impelled arms N therein; release of said engagement being procured by impelling downwardly the lugs M on said arms.
The cutter U is mounted on a pin Q capable of motion in the angular slot 0 P in the jaw G, whereby the cutter will alternately be brought into and out of contact with the pipe. In either position the pin Q is rigidly held by the cam screw R located ad jaccntly thereto and revoluble like an ordinary screw.
It will be apparent that upon releasing the arms K and N from contact, by depressing the lugs M, that the jaw G will assume the position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, during which time-and no other-its altitude on the wrench B can be regulated by reading of the diameter of the pipe, to be worked, in the gage W.
Having thus fully described my improvements, what I claim is In a wrench, the angular head B integrally formed with the dentated handle A provided with a gage W, in combination with the sliding jaw 0 provided with bearings E; the dentated jaw G pivotally suspended by pin F and provided at its rear end with a dentated are T registering with the teeth on handle A; the cutter U located in a recess of jaw G and adjustable therein so as to be brought a'nd maintained in contact with the pipe at will; the spring-controlled wing screw I to vary the angle of jaw G to the pipe; and the springimpelled arms N, provided with lugs M, adapted to lock the toothed arms K of the jaw G,-
in position, as set forth and for the purpose described. 1
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
TILLMAN H. ANDERSON. Witnesses:
J 0s. W. WILLIAMS, R. MCNEILL.
