SAW-SET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 9, 1912.
Application filed. January 20, 1912. Serial N 0. 672,396.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GROVER C. PRICE, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Elmo, in the county of Chattanooga and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Saw-Set; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new and useful saw set.
The invention aims as its essential object to provide an improved saw set having novel, efficient and practical features of construction.
One of the features of construction is the production of a mechanism for setting the teeth of a saw.
Another feature is the provision of gripping means, operated automatically by the mechanism, for automatically gripping the saw simultaneously with the set-ting of each tooth, so as to hold the saw in position.
The invention comprises further features and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a sectional view through a saw set constructed in accordance with the invention, showing the moving parts thereof operated in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the saw set. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the U- shaped plate.
Referring to the drawings 1 designates the frame of the saw set having the side plates 2, the head 3, between which and the forward ends of the side plates a U-shaped opening is formed designated bythe character 4 and a handle 5, projecting rearwardly of the side plates. Preferably these parts of the frame are all cast in one piece. A plate 6 U-shaped in cross section fits the head 3, one face of which plate at its upper end is beveled, as shown at 7, against which bevel the teeth are pressed when being set. This plate is adjustable, and is held in ad justed positions by the thumb screw 8, which penetrates a slot 9 in the head 3. This thumb screw is threaded in the plate, as shown at 10.
Between the side plates 2 is a pair of guides 11, between which the longitudinally movable bolt 12 is guided. This bolt has its forward end provided with a bevel. which contacts with the teeth of the saw when setting the teeth against the bevel of the U-shaped, plate. Pivotally mounted upon a pin 13 between the side plates is a lever 14, the short arm 16 of which is pivotally connected )to the rear end of the bolt as at 17. Also arranged between the side plates is the operating lever 18, mounted upon the pin 19. The central portion of the operating lever bears against the long arm 20 of the lever 14, so as to raise the long arm 20 against the action of the spring 21. When the long arm of the lever 14 is so raised the bolt '12 is reciprocated in the direction of the teeth of the saw, so as to set them. Arranged between the side plates of the frame and pivotally mounted on a pin 22 is a gripping jaw 28, adapted to grip the body of the saw-blade. The rear of the jaw is formed with a cam surface 24, with which the end 25 of the operating lever beyond its pivot contacts, there being a leaf spring carried by the operating lever to hold the cam surface of the jaw in engagement with the operating lever. This leaf spring is denoted by the numeral 27.
When the operating lever is depressed toward the handle of the frame, the jaw is thrown in a position to grip the saw blade between it and the U-shaped plate, and when so operated the lever 14 is in turn actuated, which will force the bolt against the desired tooth of the saw blade, and set the same. The saw set is utilized to set every other tooth, from one side of the saw blade, and then-reverse, so as to set the intervening teeth.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is:
In a saw set, a frame having a body and a head and provided with a U-shaped opening between them, in which a saw blade is arranged, a plate adjustable on the head and provided with a bevel at its upper end, a sliding bolt having a forward beveled end to contact with the teeth of the saw blade, a spring tensioned lever for actuating the bolt, an operating lever to operate the spring tensioned lever, a gripping jaw pivoted in the frame adapted to be automatically actuated by the operating lever to grip the saw blade between it and the plate simultaneously with the actuation of the bolt, and
