J. MoA. JONES TOY.
No. 507,911. I Patented Oct. 81, 1893.
A TTOHNE Y.
WITNESSES: I
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN MCARTHUR JONES, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM ALLEN, OF SAME PLACE.
TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 507,911, dated October 31, 1893. Application filed September 22, 1892. Serial No. 446,569. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN MOARTHUR J oNEs, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia,State of Penntion, whereby by twisting the string and a1- ternately-tightening and loosening the same, twirling motions are imparted to the body and a whistling or musical sound produced therefrom, the contracted throats joining enlarged air chambers formed by said swells, so that air is directed into and out of the openings, and the sound is thereby vastly increased.
Figure 1 represents an end view of a toy embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a partial side elevation and partial section thereof, the string being omitted. Fig. 3 represents a section on line 0c, 00, Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several-figures.
Referring to the drawings: A designates the body of the toy, the same being hollow and formed of two dishing disks or walls B, B, whose peripheries are connected by the lap joint 0. The body has in it near the periphery thereof, the openings D for the admission and discharge of air, and the central portion of the body is depressed as at E, so that the corresponding portion of one disk is close to the other, the depression extending for a portion of the length of the diameter of the body, leaving said body at the ends of said depression open or of the form of passages F, which permit air to pass through the body from one opening to the other, it being noticed that said passages F form contracted throats between the remaining side portions F, whereby when 5 the toy is in use the air is forcibly directed from one portion to the other through said throats F, said portions constituting large air chambers J. In the depressed center E are openings G to receive the two lengths of a string H, which requires to be twisted and then tightened and loosened, whereby twirling motions in reverse directions are imparted to the body. Then as the air forcibly rushes into and out of the openings D, a whistling sound is produced, but if reeds are secured to the body at the openings D, the sound will be musical. It is also seen that as the disks are dishing in their nature and contracted at their center by the depression E, the body is in a measure crimped or corrugated, thus strengthening the same, and leaving swells or portions F at the periphery which form the large air chambers J, which are in communication by means of the passages F, so that air may pass through the body to and from the opposite openings D in the forcible manner stated, and thus the sound is vastly increased.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I A toy consisting of dishing disks with the side swells F, the central depressions E, with openings therein for the operating string, and
the contracted throats F at the ends of said depressions, joining the enlarged air chambers J formed by said swells F, said parts being combined substantially as described.
