To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, JOHN A. ISAACSON, a citi-. zen of the United States, residing at Moline, in the county of Rock Island and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin End-Gates for Wagons; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to endgates for wagons and the object of my improvement is to produce an endgate to obviate the use of rods, hooks and such like devices commonly used to keep and retain endgates in place. I attain this object by the devices as shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an upright sectional end view of the left inside of the side board of a wagon box with device attached thereto for holding the end of endgate. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the right side of wagon box showing attachment thereto for locking right end of endgate. Fig. 3 is an upright view of the endgate with devices and attachments thereto to engage and lock with side section of a Wagon box. Fig. 4. is a detail sectional view of one end of the gate.

The devices and attachments comprised in the combination of my invention consist of metal plates a. 01. which are attached to the inner sides at the outer end of the side boards and to the bed or bottom of wagon box in an upright position, having at their outer edge a rod or boltm to pass through the bed or bottom of the box, holding by screw and nut. The inner edge of said plates are turned at a sharpangle n forming a cleat or brace c. to the endgate. Plate a. has two open slots b. b. at equi-distance from the cleat or brace c.

It. when being entered in catches g. g. and can be turned downward over the latch to prevent it from getting out of place.

In disconnecting the endgate from the wagon box a downward pressure on bar Z. releases the levers or latch from catches g. g. when a pull of about forty-five degrees backward releases lugs (1. cl. from slots 1). b. and the endgate A. is free. In making connection the endgate is placed at an angle of about forty-five degrees the lugs d. d. will enter slots b. b. and a pressure forward brings latches k. k. to engage catches g. g. and the connection is made complete.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In combination with the wagon having the slots b, b on one side and the socket g on the other, the end gate having the lugs cl (1 on one end adapted to the slots in the side and the latch lever K pivoted to the end gate to swing vertically in eugagiu g and disengaging the socket, substantially as described.

2.
