No. 507,440. Ptented Oct. 24, 1893.

n ttomey NTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN E. KNAPP, OF OLYPHANT, PENNSYLVANIA.
SHADE-HANGER BRACKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 507,440, dated October 24, 1893.
Application filed April 28, 1893. Serial No. 472,221. (No model.)
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN E. KNAPP, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Olyphant, in the county of Lackawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shade- Hanger Brackets; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference' marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figures l, 2 and 3 of the drawings are perspective views showing the hanger in the different positions in which it may be used.
This invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in shade hangers,
' the letters A, A', designate a pair of my improved hanger brackets, which are carried by a connecting bar B designed to be made fast to the window frame or casing by nails or screws. Said brackets are designed to be made from metal, preferably malleable or sheet metal, and are each formed at the base with a clip a designed to partially embrace the bar B, said clips when placed upon the bar being sufficiently loose to enable them to be slid thereon to the desired adjustment. A slight tap with a hammer or other suitable tool upon the bottom flanges d of the clip secures it firmly to the bar. The projecting ends of the bar may then be cut off, or they may be left projecting. The clip of one bracket may be made fast to the bar at the outset, and the proper adjustment effected with the other bracket.
By means of the clips a I am enabled to use a much smaller bar B than would otherbrace the bar, and prevent its splitting when the securing screws or nails are passed therethrough. The beveled walls of the slot c in the bracket A are formed with offsets d, d, forming the projecting shoulder e at one side, and the under shoulder e at the opposite side. When the hanger is used at the top of a window in the ordinary manner, the gudgeon on the roller will run under the shoulder e; but by reversing the bracket upon the bar, in the position shown in Fig. 2, the hanger may be adjusted to the bottom of a window frame or sash door, and the shade hung so as to draw upward, the shoulder e holding the gudgeon. This shape of the slot also enables the hanger to be fixed inside of the frame and under the top of the casing as shown in Fig. 3, with the brackets in a depending perpendicular position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An improved shade hanger comprising the bar B, and the brackets A, A havingbase clips engaging said bar and slidable thereon, the clip A being designed to be reversed upon said bar, and having therein a beveled slot c, offset at d, d, to form a projecting shoulder e at one side and an under shoulder e', at the opposite side, said shoulders being so arranged, in connection with the reversibility of the said bracket, as to enable the slot to serve as a bearing for the roller gudgeon when supported either at the top or bottom of a window, or in perpendicular relation thereto, substantially as specified.
2. An improved bracket for shade hangers, having therein a beveled slot c, offset at d, d, to form a projecting shoulder e at one side and an under-shoulder e at the opposite side, said shoulders being so arranged as to enable the slot to serve as a bearing for the roller gudgeon when placed either at the top or bottom, of a window, or in perpendicular relation thereto, substantially as specied.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN E. KNAPP.
