TACK-HAMMER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 507,317, dated October 24, 1893.

Application filed June 29, 1893.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JONES (low, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kinderhook, in the county of Pike and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tack-Hammers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in tack hammers; and it has for its object to provide a simple and inexpensive hammer of this kind which will effectively serve its intended purpose; and such invention consists in the novel and peculiar combination of parts, hereinafter described in the specification, and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved tack hammer. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the head and a portion of the handle, and Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the several parts which form the head, detached.

In the accompanying drawings, A indicates the head portion proper, to which is secured the handle B in the .usual manner; such handle in practice is preferably bored out at its outer end as at B to form a tackholding chamber which is held closed by a cap B 0 indicates a sleeve held to slide over the lower end of the head A, its base portion (which in practice is of steel to form a solid impact face) being provided with a slot-way 0 extending from the center to its outer free edge 0', which edge is formed by cutting a portion of the lower end of the sleeve 0 away as at 0 The sleeve 0 is fitted on the lower end of the hammer, with its base normally held against the base a of the head, and to hold it in such position a coiled spring D is held within an elongated slot E cut in the lower part of the head (see Fig.2), the upper end of which is held to bear against a cross pin F secured at its ends in opposite sides of the Serial No, 79,169. sleeve, and to hold the sleeve from lateral movement the slot has straight parallel side walls in which snugly fits the pin F which is flat at its sides as shown in Fig. 3.

By constructing the several parts in the manner described, it will be readily seen that while the sleeve is held from lateral movement it is free to move vertically, it be ing, however, as before stated, normally held up with its base against the base of the head.

To put the tack in place, the sleeve 0 is pressed down, and the tack with its head between the sleeve and the base of the head, is slipped in the way a, and as the pressure is released from the sleeve it will be clamped to the hammer as shown in Fig. 1, and when so held it can be driven in almost as far as desired by one blow. In case it is necessary to drive the same farther, the hammer is slipped from the tack, and is used in the ordinary manner, the base of the sleeve serving as the impact head, which being made of steel will not become battered.

If desired, a long handle can be inserted into the head, and the implement can then be used as a bill-posters hammer.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A tack-hammer having a slidable sleeve at the base formed with a solid impact face and having a tack-receiving notch, substantially as and for the purposes described.

2. In a tack hammer, in combination, with the head having a slot, a sleeve having an impact face, held to slide over the base end of the head, said impact face adapted to clamp the tack head against the base of such hammer head, a cross pin connected to the sleeve and extended through the slot in the hammer head, and a spring held in such slot to bear against the cross pin to force it upward, all substantially as specified.

3. The herein described improved tack hammer, comprising a head portion havinga slot portion, a handle, having a tack receiving chamber in its end, a sleeve 'held to clamp over the base of the head, and formed with a solid impact face formed with a tack- In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
