IMPROVED BUCKLE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 50,706, dated October 31, 1865.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES B. HATFIELD, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State ot' Massachusetts, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Buckles for Shoes, dac. and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l is front View, Fig. 2 a rear elevation, and Fig. 3 atra-nsrerse section,ofa\buckle constructed in accordance with my invention.
rIhe buckle is composed of two plates hinged together and so formed that one has a. tongue to extend intoa recess made in the other, the part from which the tongue projects having a .slot to receive the strap when passed through the buckle.
In the drawings, A and B are the said plates, a being the tongue, and b the recess for its reception. The inner edge ofthe recess is beveled, as shown at c. The hinges ofthe plates are represented at d d, and the slot for receiving the stra-p is exhibited at d.
Hooks or spurs e e, for attaching the buckle to the upper leather of a shoe, or to any other article,n1ay be extended from the under side ot' either ofthe parts A B.
In using the buckle the strap which is to be confined by it isto be passed upward through the recess, and thence around the edge and over the top of the tongue, and thence through the Slot and under the part in which such slot is formed.
I claim- The improved. buckle made substantially as described, viz: ofthe two platesA B, hinged together and formed with the tongue a and the recess b and the slot. d, arranged as speeitled.
