UNrrEo STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE FREUND, OF DURANGO, COLORADO.
ERASER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 506,994, dated October 17, 1893.
Application filed May 3, 1893. Serial No. 472,890. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, GEORGE FREUND, of Durango, in the county of La Plata and State of Colorado, have invented a new and Improved Eraser, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved eraser embodying a plurality of scraping edges and an abrasive surface, thereby increasing the convenience and efficiency of the eraser.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawlngs, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Flgure 1 is an edge view of an eraser embodylng my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view thereof. Fig. 3 is a plan view illustrating a modification. Fig. 4 is an edge view of such modified form, the blades being omitted. Fig. 5 is a detail edge view with the blades in position; and Fig. 6 is a plan view of one of the removable blades of the modified form.
In forming an eraser in accordance with my invention, I provide a bodya of steel, of suitable length for convenient manipulation, and form at one end a somewhat elliptical head b, having broad side edges 0, the edges d formed by the flat sides of the head and the broadedges c forming scraper edges, four of such being thus provided, that is two at each side of the point of the head 1). The edges 0 are preferably grooved as shown, thereby affording better scraper edges and enabling them to be sharp ened the better. The opposite end 0 of the eraser is formed with an abrasive surface fat oneside for abrading the paper and smoothing the same. The grooves of the edges may be omitted, leaving them flat, if desired.
In the form shown in Figs. 3 to 6, the scraper edges d are formed on separate blades 9 that are seated on each side of the reduced end I) of the body, against the shoulders b and held thereto by a screw it. The edges of the blades project beyond the edges of the reduced end b thereby forming in the edge of the scraper head a marginal groove,
which is the same in effect as the groovingof the side edges in the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2. In this modification the opposite end is provided with an abrasive surface 11 at one side and aconvex smooth burnishing surface j, at the opposite side.
If desired, in either form the main portion of the body may be covered with wood, gutta-percha, celluloid or other suitable material, the same as knife handles are generally constructed.
By providing the increased number of scraping edges, frequent sharpening is made unnecessary, and with the abrasive and burnishing surfaces a most convenient and efficient eraser is provided.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An eraser comprising a handle portion provided at one end with an arrow -like scraper head having a marginal groove in both edges and provided at its opposite end with an abrader, substantially as set forth.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, an eraser having scraper blades securedthereto on opposite sides, and projecting beyond their seats, substantially as described.
3. As an improved article of manufacture, an eraser having a plurality of scraper edges extending around one end, and provided at the opposite end with an abrasive surface and a convex burnishing surface, substantially as described.
4. As an improved article of manufacture an eraser consisting in the handle a terminating at one end in the red uced extremity b, the two blades secured to opposite sides of said extremity and projecting at their edges therebeyond forming a marginally grooved scraper head, and the burnisher and abrader on opposite sides of the other end of the handle,
substantially as set forth.
