ADJUSTABLE HAMMOCK-SUPPORT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 506,776, dated October 1'7, 1893.

Be it known that I, DAVID FORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Litchfield, 1n the county of Hillsdale and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful .Adjustable Hammock-Support, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in devices for supporting hammocks, and the object of the same is to provide means for inclining the hammock by altering the adjustment of the support and for folding the support into a portable form for transportation.

Further objects and advantages of my invention Will appear in the following description and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a support embodying my invention, With a hammock applied thereto in the operative position. Fig. 2 is a similaiview of the device folded.

The base of my improved support comprises the parallel transverse sills, 1, and the central, longitudinal bed-piece, 2, which is coinected at its ends to the centers of said s1 s.

The interval between the sills may be varied, for a purpose which will be hereinafter explained, by means of the connections between the same and the adjoining ends of the bed-piece. Such connections consist of series of vertical perforations,.3, in the bed piece, and adjusting bolts, 4, which may be arranged in either of said perforations. These bolts also engage corresponding perforations in the centers of the sills. The stretcher arms, 5, are supported at intermediate points, approximately their centers, by means of the laterally inclined strain-rods, 6, Which are loosely connected at their lower ends to the sills at points adjacentto their extremities, and are pivotally connected at their upper ends to opposite sides of the arms, 5. The strain-rods, 6, are provided at their lower ends with eyes, 7, which are engaged by the staples, 8, in the sills, and they are provided at their upper ends with eyes, 9, which are engaged by the bolts, 10, which are carried by bands, 11, encircling the stretcher arms.

The bed-piece is provided in its upper side with a series of sockets, 12, which series extends in both directions from the center of the timber, and the stretcher arms are provided at their lowerends with points or spurs, 13, to engage said sockets.

The stretcher arms are provided at their upper free ends with hooks, 14, for the engagement of the ends of the hammock, 15.

By reason of the pivotalconnections between the strain rods and the stretcher arms and sills, the feet of the said arms may be arranged at any desired points of the bedpiece to increase or diminish the tension upon the suspended hammock, and the adjustable sills increase the range of adjustment so that hammocks of any ordinary length may be held at any desired tension. Furthermore,

-by adjusting one of the stretcher arms outward a greater distance than the other, the upper ends thereof may be arranged in different horizontal planes, thus inclining the supported hammock to suit the convenience of the occupant.

In Fig. 1, one of the stretcher arms is shown, in dotted lines, adjusted to incline the hammock.
