Description
UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEIoE OLIVER JUDD, OF CHERRY VALLEY, NEW YORK.
HINGE FOR DOORS, &c.
Specification of Letters Patent No. Y5,066, dated April 17, 1847.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, 'OLIVER JUDD, o-f Cherry Valley, in the county of Otsego and State of New York, lhave invented a new and useful Improvement in the Fashion or Form of Loose-Joint Butt-Hinges, by which improvement the hinges are made stronger with the same weight of metal and are fastened more firmly to the wood and vwith less trouble than in the common way withv screws, and the expense of the screws saved; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and eXact description of said improvement, viz:
The socket and pin or joint of the hinge may be the same as the common parliament or loose joint hinges7 the other part which I call the wings (and which in the common hinges are provided with holes for wood screws to fasten the same to the door and door casing) in my improved hinges are described as follows. The outer end ofthe wings are made in the form 0f dovetail tenons, there is a crook or bend in the said wings forming a square or right angle with the said tenons (see the drawings hereunto annexed) so that in fastening the hinges to the wood, a mortise is made in the edge of the door, and also of the door casing to receivethe said tenons, and a notch or chan- 'nel cut from the said mortise to the face of the door, and of the door casing, to receive that part of the wing between the tenon and jointof the hinge; the tenon then being driven into the said mortise brings the neck or other part of the wing'into the notch p lprepared for it as aforesaid, and the hinge i li; made secure in its place by a wedge or ey. l
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The fashion or form of the wings of the hinges, by forming tenons at the ends of the wings, and making a crook or band in the said wings so that the tenons are fastened with a wedge or key into mortises made in the edge of the door and door Casing, they other part of the wings resting in notches or channels cut from the said mortises to the the face o f the door and the said door casing, as herein described.
OLIVER J UDD.
