Patented Sept. 26, 1893.

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
WESLEY OORRY JONES, OF WARRENSBURG, MISSOURI.
BUTTON-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 505,768, dated September 26, 1893.
Application filed November '7, 1892. Serial No. 451,217. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that LWEsLEv COREY JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Warrensburg, in the county of Johnson and State ot Missouri, have invented a new and useful Button-Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to button-fasteners,
and has for its object to provide a device ot" the character set forth of simple form, strong and durable, and easily applied; and with thisoloject in view, the invention consists of the construction and arrangement of the parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings-Figure l is a perspective View of a piece of fabric or analogous material, showing the improved device applied in connection therewith. Fig. 2 is a similar View looking toward the rear of the fastening. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 with the back-plate removed. Fig.4 is a similar view ot' the parts of the button detached.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several Views.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral l designates a button of any preferred form of construction, through the eye or eyes of which is passed a staple 2,01? bendable wire, the legs of said staple being passed through the fabric or other material to Which the button is applied and then drawn together and passed through a central opening or eye 3, in a backplate 4, the said back-plate 4 being of concavo-convex form and having a peripheral flange with diametrically-arranged notches 5 therein. The said back-plate 4t forms a cavity between the same and the fabric, and the legs of the staple 2, after being passed through the eye 3, are bent over the rear side of the said back-plate 4 and passed through the notches 5, after which theends of said legs are inserted under the said back-plate in the cavity formed thereby and bent around in re verse directions to more readily provide `for a quick application of the device and also as ameans ot more firmly securing lthe several parts in connection. The eye 3 in the center of the'back-plate is to bring the strain centrally to that point, and said plate having a slot or notch on each side of the same divides the strain on opposite sides, and by that means the staple cannot pull either side outward or upward, whereas if it had only one slot it would cause the side of the same to be pulled upward when on a strain. It will be observed that the wire staple that fastens or connects the button to the back-plate has one leg thereof made longer than the other in order to pass the said staple more quickly through the 'central eye 3 of the said back-plate than if both legs of the staple were of the same length. By bending the legs of the staple under the baek-plate in opposite directions a torsional resistance is provided that Will obviate ready disconnection or Withdrawal ot' the said legs of the staple.
y Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is- The combination of a but-ton, a staple connecting the same to the material, and a back platewith a single central eye or opening, a peripheral flange formingacavity on one side thereof, and peripheral notches extending therethrough and diametrically opposed to each other in said ilange, the legs of the staple being unitedly passed through the said central eye of the back plate and spread apart, and passed through `the said notches thereof and then deflected under the cavitied side of the said back plate and bent in opposite directions, whereby the ends of the staple are inclosed by the said back plate and held between the latter and the fabric, substantially as described. s
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aitixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
