CARL GUMESON, OF NATIONAL MINE, MICHIGAN.
FACE-PROTECTO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 505,653, dated September 26, 1893.
Application filed May 26, 1893. Serial No- '75,587. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CARL GUMEsON, of National Mine, in the county of Marquette and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Face-Protector, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in that class of face masks which are used to protect the face from extreme cold and especially from cold winds; and the object of my invention is to produce a cheap, warm and simple protector which may be conveniently placed upon the head so as to cover the face, which thoroughly protects the more exposed features, which does not interfere with the breathing or speaking, which has a mouth piece and .nose piece which may be easily re moved from the mouth and nose when necessary or desirable, and which is also provided with adjustable eye protectors.
To these ends my invention consists ofcertain features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a broken front view of the protector, embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the plate which supports the nose case and the eye protector bows; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the nose case.
The protector is made of any suitable material which is capable of excluding wind' and keeping the face warm, and it is made of a size and shape to fit nicely over the face. It is provided at the top with suitable bands 11 and 12 which are adapted to embrace the upper portion of the head and support the protector.
The protector is provided at its side edges with the usual ear mufflers or pads 13 which are adapted to incase the ears and keep them Warm.
The protector is preferably split at the chin to insure a good fit on the face, and on op posite sides of the split portion are ribbons or bands 15 which may be tied beneath the chin so as to hold the lower portion of the protector in place.
The protector is provided in front with a slot 16, large enough to expose the mouth and permit the nose to stick through it.
The protectoris provided with a mouth protector 17, which has an elliptical frame 18, this being placed transversely and provided with a convex netting 19, through which sufficient air may pass to facilitate breathing and to permit easy talking, but the central portion of the mouth protector, the netting is covered by a suitable fabric which keeps the cold wind from striking the mouth.
The mouth-piece or protector is supported by elastic bands 21 which are secured to its ends and to reinforced portions 22 of the protector, although these portions may be dispens'ed with. The tension of the bands or straps 21 is such as to hold the mouth-piece or protector in place, butif desired it may be pulled down beneath the chin, thus enabling a person to speak with more freedom. Above the mouth protector is a nose case or protector having a metallic frame 25 which is of sufficient convexity to cover a nose, and this frame is covered with a suitable fabric 26, which excludes the wind, but there are openings 27 at the lower end of the case and opposite'the nostrils which permit the discharge of sufficient air for breathing purposes. The
upper end of the nose-piece frame is a wire loop, which is adapted for detachable connection with a catch attached to the mask frame. That is to say, the upper end of the nose frame is held in the bent end 28 of a spring tongue 29 which is secured to a plate 30, and the latter is fastened to the frame work of the protector, at a point between the eyes. The free end of the tongue is adapted to project through a slot 31 in the plate, and this arrangement permits the nose case to be swung upward when necessary or to be detached if desired. The plate has also on its sides lugs 82, to which are pivoted the shanks 33 of the bows 34 which are provided with glass 35 and are adapted to swing over the eye-holes 35 of the mask, so as to protect the eyes from the cold winds, but if desired, the eye protectors may be dispensed with. The eye-holes 35 are preferably provided with a metal binding 35 to make sure that they are always in the right shape.
The protector is applied to the face in the usual way, the bands 11 and 12 being slipped over the head, and the ribbons or bands 15 tied beneath the chin, and it will be seen that the exposed features are thoroughly protected, that no impediment is offered to easy breathing and speaking, and that the whole device mfiay be readily applied and as easily taken 0 Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. lnaface protector, the combination, with the mask frame and a suspending catch attached to the latter, of the swinging noseframe and cover, havinga wire loop at the top which is adapted to be detachably connected with said catch, as shown anddescribed.
2. A face protector provided with a nose opening a plate secured to the protector above the opening, a spring tongue secured to the plate and having a lower bent end, and the swinging nose case having a cross piece extending undersaid bent end, substantially as set forth.
3. A face protector provided with eye openin gs and horizontally swinging eye protectors hinged to the protector frame at their inner I ends between the eye openings, substantially as set forth.
4. A face protector comprising a face covering having eye and nose openings, aplate secured between the eye openings, horizontally swinging eye protectors hinged at their inner ends to the sides of the plate, and a vertically swinging nose case hinged at its upper end to the lower portion of the plate, substantially as set forth.
5. A face protector provided with a mouth opening a strip of fabric crossing the opening between its ends and secured to the mouth fran1e,'a frame covered with netting and extending over the said opening under the said strip, and elastic connections between the ends of the frame and the protector, substantially as set forth.
