BUTTON.

SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 505,479, dated September 26, 1893.

Application filed February 25, 1893. Serial No. 463,752. (No model.)

To aZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH F. PLATT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waterbury,in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to impiovements in buttons, of that character adapted specially for garments and to be secured in place without the use of thread, and the object of my invention is the provision of a button which can be efiectively used on cloth of varying thicknesses and which will possess merit in points of simplicity, durability and cheapness.

The invention consists of a button embodying novel details of construction, combination and adaptation of parts substantially as disclosed herein.

Figure 1 represents a sectional view of my button, and Fig, 2 represents a perspective view thereof with the parts detached. Fig. 3 represents a sectional view of another form of my button, and Fig. 4 represents a perspective view of the same with the parts detached.

Referring by letter to the drawings Figs. 1 and 2, A designates the cap or face plate of the button, from which depends the back or socket plate B, tapering toward the lower end and having the lower edge split to form tongues H, which are turned in or under and engage the lower edge of the shell D, which is placed within the back or socket plate, and the back or socket plate Bis also provided with the barbs or points H which enter the cloth and clinch therein and hold the button firmly in the cloth. The said inner shell is provided with slot or kerf E which extends from the lower edge upward to or near the flanged edge of the shell and gives a spring or elastic action to the two parts or divisions of the shell and causes them to engage the point or points F on the shank G, which passes through the cloth into the back plate and shell and engages the edges around the opening of said shell as clearly shown in Fig. 1.

In Figs. 3 and 4 I also show the features of other figures but add the plate J having the points J adapted to enter the cloth and hold the button firmly in position.

The manner of applying my button will be apparent from the description and drawings and no comment is necessary and it is evident thatI provide a button which is simple, durable and inexpensive and practical.

I claim as my invention A button consisting of the face or cap plate, the back or socket plate secured to and depending therefrom and having the tongues at the lower edge thereof and carrying the points which enter the material, the shell within the socket plate having the kerf or slot extending from. the lower edge to or nearly to the upper edge thereof and the shank having the head or heads adapted to engage the shell,'in the manner described.
