BUTTON -FASTE1\TER.
Application filed March 21, 1910, Serial NO. 550,813. Renewed March 28, 1913.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 6,1913.
Serial No. 757,484.
To all whom 2'25 may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN ALBERT TELL REYMOND, of Ottawa, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, a subject of the King of Great Britain, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Button-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in button fasteners and the objects of my invention are to provide simple and effective means for attaching buttons Or for retaining two parts of a separable button together.
The particular objects are to provide an improved form of locking means which comprises a shank, a slidable plate having slots with enlarged portions adapted to engage the reduced portions 011 the shank of the button.
Other objects are to provide an improved form of shank having improved means for attaching to the head of the button and to this end it comprises a staple member having parallel shanks adapted to extend through certain of the apertures in the button, provided with hook members adapted to extend into the other apertures of the button.
Further objects still are to provide means for taking up the slack in the shank of the button and also to form a flexible neck on the shank and this part of the invention is accomplished by the provision of a spiral spring around the shank, these and other details of the invention being all more fully set forth and described in the accompanying specification and drawings.
In the drawings Figure 1 is an elevation of the button and fastener in assembled position. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the fastening members with looking plate thereon. Fig. 3 is a sec tional view through the fastening member taken through the shank member. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the shank member. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the base member. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the slidable locking plate. Fig. 7 is a sectional view through the assembled button. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the cover member.
In the drawings like figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
Referring to the drawings A represents the head of the button which may be of any suitable form or which might be one part of a separable button, such as a stud.
13 represents the shank member which, in
accordance with the present invention, is made in the form of a staple having parallel shanks 10 and 11 adapted to extend through two of the apertures in the button, while hook members 12 and 13 are rigidly secured to the top of the staple and adapted to enter the remaining apertures in the shank, as shown in Fig. 7. The ends of the shanks l0 and 11 are pointed and provided a short distance from the end with annular grooves 14 and 15 adapted to form engaging means for the locking plate, as hereinafter described.
G represents the fastening member comprising a base plate 16, cover member 17, and a slidable locking plate 18. The slidable locking plate is formed with three slots 19, and 21, the center slot being the guide slot, while the other slots 19 and 21 are adapted to receive the ends of the shanks and are provided with enlarged portions 22 through which the shanks may be inserted, ordinarily the width of the slots being only sufficient to receive the reduced portions of the shanks at the grooves 14 and 15. The slidable plate is held in position in the base member by means of tongues 23 and 24, struck up from the base member and turned over the locking plate, and by an upwardly turned tongue 25 adapted to fit into the guiding slot 20 and thereby steady the locking plate in sliding movement and limit the movement of the same. The cover member 17 is more or less dome shaped in form and is provided at one side with a cut awa portion 26 which is normally filled by a flange 27 on the locking plate, said flange being adapted to be engaged by the thumb or finger of the user desiring to unlock the shank.
To form a suitable flexible neck on the shank and also to take up any slack between the head and the fastening member, a spiral spring 28 is provided extending around the shank on the side of the cloth nearest the head.
To attach the button in position, the shank is first inserted through the head, the spring is then placed on the shank, the shank is inserted through the cloth and into the slots in the locking member, the base member 16 being provided with suitable perforations 29 and 30, through which the shanks may extend. The locking plate is then slid inwardly, when the grooves 14 and 15 on the shanks will be engaged by the slots 19 and 21 and the shank thus held firmly and rigidly in position.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of my invention within the scope of the claim, could be made without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What I claim as my invention is:
A device of the class described comprising a head having perforations therethrough, a staple member provided with annular grooves, a base plate formed with tongues struck up and turned over to form a guide Way, and a third tongue struck up in the plate and out of alinement with the other a sliding locking plate held be having a slot to re In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
