FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 13, 1%14.
Application filed February 17, 1912. Serial No. 678,183.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ELMER A. BENSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Peru, in the county of La Salle and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fasteners, of which ther following is a specification.
he present invention relates to improvements in fastening devices.
In carrying out my invention it is my purpose to provide a fastening device for shoes, leggings, gloves or the like, the same embodying a button and a rotatable yfastener for the button wherein the employment of button holes as well as the hooks for fastening the button within the button hole is' dispensed with.
lVith the above recited Objects in View, and others of a similar nature which will be more fully understood as the nature ofthe invention progresses, the improvement resides in the novel construction, lcombination and arrangement of parts set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a view illusrating my improvement applied to a shoe. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional View upon the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a bottom Iplan view of a fastener. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view of the casing for the fastening. Fig. 5 is a perspective View of the button.
In the drawing I have illustrated my improved fastener as applied to a shoe but as heretofore stated the fastener is not to be thus limited in its useful application, as the same may be applied upon various other articles.
Referring now to the drawing in deirill,
e quarter of the vamp is provided at spaced intervals with buttons. These buttons embody a head 3 having a stem 4 and a base 5. The base is integrally formed with a plurality of depending prongs. The prongs are formed of bendable material and are adapted after being inserted within the quarter 'of the vamp, to be bent and clenched against the quarter, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawing. By this arrangement it will be noted that the employment of special securing means for retaining the buttons upon the shoe is entirely dispensed with and further that the buttons may be easily and quickly attached to or removed from the shoe, as desired.
The numeral 7 designates the button securing member. This member is positioned upon the portion of the quarter over-lapping that provided with the buttons 2. The niember 7, has, what may be termed. its shank 8 hollow and is constructed of a single piece of suitable metal, stamped to provide a base 9 having a continuous ange 10 which is provided by over-lapping one of the portions of the member above the lower portions, and the said member is then bent upwardly to provide thefshank proper. The base 9 is arranged above its iange 10 and is centrally provided with a reduced opening 11, the same being of an area equaling the thickness of the stem 4 of the button 2. The base is further provided with an enlarged opening 12 of an area slightly greater than the head 3 of the button, and the base is provided with a passage or opening 13 which forms a communication between the openings-11 and 12, thus providing the base of the button with what may be termed a key hole slot. The upper portion of the shank 8 is slitted, and the portions of the metal between the said slits are`curved outwardly and downwardly to provide a plurality of tongues 14, the latter being adapted to engage with the incurved edges 17 provided by the top 18 of the casing. The top 18 may be of any ornamental design, and may be constructed of some thin metal and is preferably cup-shaped.
The numeral 16 designates a reinforcing member for the top. This member 16 is constructed of some resilient material which has a greater strength than the metal from which the top is constructed. The member 16 embodies a centrally curved portion which contacts with the central portion of n l18 tightly against the shank 7 as well as against the shoe 1. By such an arrangement, it will be noted that the head is always under the tension of the resilient reinforcing member so that its edge cannot accidentally become displaced from the tongues 14, and in connecting the securing member to the button, the member 7 is rotated until the enlarged opening of the base 18 is arranged over the head 8 of the bottom 2. The member 7 is then rotated until the stein l of the butto-n 2 is brought to within the reduced opening ll of the base. As has been stated `the shank 8 is constructed of some suitable metal, which of course provides a certain amount of resiliency, and as the base is elevated above the flange l0, the same will exert a tension against the head 3 of the button 2.
Having thus described the invention what I claim is The herein described construction vof fastening devices for buttons, including in combination with a button having a stem, a rotatable member comprising a fastener for the button, said member embodying a hollow shank having a base provided with an enlarged opening anda reduced opening communicating with the enlarged opening, the said shank being formed with an outturned flange which is arranged below the base, the opposite edge of the shank being slitted and the portions of the metal between the slits being curved outwardly and downwardly to provide tongues, a cupshaped top constructed of flexible material having an incurved edge which is adapted to be arranged between the tongues and the shank of the member, a reinforcing member constructed of resilient material, said member having a central curved portion which is adapted to contact with the underface of the top and being further provided with an outwardly extending downwardly curvedend which is arranged between the tongues of the shank and theY incurved edge of the top and adapted to exert a tension upon the top and the said incurved edge, for the purpose set forth, yand the head of the butt-on adapted to be received within the enlarged opening of the base of the said securing member and the securing member adapted to be ,rotated to bring the stem of the button to within the reduced opening of the base to permit of its head resting upon the elevated base.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ELMER A. BENSON.
