` Be it known that I, JOHN A. O. LIVONI, of Marion, Marion county, Kansas,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Haine-Staples, of which the following is a full, clear', and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.

My invention relates to hame attachments.

The obj ect of my invention is to provide an attachment for hannes, which is ornamental of appearance and which allows a vertical adjustment in attaching the trace to said haine attachment so that, if the collar be applied to a horse having a deep or shallow neck the trace may be adjusted in such manner that the pull or strain will all come against the shoulders of the horse at the proper place.

A further object of my invention is to provide an attachment which is simple, durable and inexpensive of construction, and which may easily be applied to or removed from the llames.

With these objects in View, my invention consists in certain peculiar and novel features of construction and arrangement as will be hereinafter described and claimed.

In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1, is a perspective view of one section of the hames with my attachment applied thereto and showing the trace as secured to said attachment in operative position. Fig. 2, is a vertical sectional view of a portion of the haines and showing the manner of securing my attachment thereto. Fig. 3, is a detail view of one of the separator tubes.

Referring to the drawings, A designates one section of the haines, and B designates my improved attachment, which is of approximately U-form; the bridge portion of said attachment being scalloped at b, b and b2 as shown. The stems C of said U -shaped attachment are passed through the body of the hamcs and also through openings of a plate D, which is secured in arecess formed in the inner side of said hames, in such manner that the cuter side thereof will lie iiush with the inner side of the haines. The inner end of these stems C are swaged at E, s'o as to prevent the withdrawal of the attachment from the hame section A, and so as not to project therefrom, and rub or wear the collar. This attachment is provided with openings G, H and Lby means of dividing tubes F which are preferably of conical form as shown, and which bear at their opposite ends against the outer face of the hannes and the inner side of the attachment B, at the juncture points of the scallops b, h and b2. A screw bolt f is passed through openings formed through the attachment at said juncture points, and through the passage of the dividing tubes F and also through openings in the haine section A, and have their screwv threaded ends engaging screw threaded openings g in the retaining plate D as shown. The openings G,II and I, are preferably arranged the same distance apart as the loops L,M and N, at the upper end of the haine section; said loops being designed to be used accordingly as the neck of the horse is deep or shallow. New, when the collar is to be applied to a horse having a medium sized neck, the clip J in the end of the trace K is adapted to engage with the scallop b of the opening H, and the middle loop M at the upper end of the haines is adapted to be connected to a corresponding loop of the other hame section (not shown) to adj ust the haines to the required size of neck. When the collar is placed upon a horse having a deep neck, the uppermost loops N of the haine sections are connected to adj ust the hannes to the required size and the clip of the trace is engaged with the scallop b, of the opening G. When the hames are placed upon a horse having a shallow neck, the loop L is used and the clip of the trace is engaged with the scallop b2 of opening I. By this arrangement, it will be seen, that the strain may always be brought directly against the shoulder of the horse. To disengage this clip J from one opening to engage it with another, for example, to disengage the clip J from opening Gr to engage it with opening H, it is necessary only to remove the upper screw F which allows the upper dividing tube F to be moved; said clip J is then allowed to drop down to the opening II and the dividing tube `F and screw bolt f arereturned to their originalposition; thus locking the clip .l into the intermediate opening H as shown in Fig-1. From IOO this description, it will be seen that I have provided an attachment to be secured upon hames, by which the trace may be adj usted vertically so that the pull orstrain will be directly upon the shoulders of the horse, and also an attachment which is simple, strong, durable and inexpensive' of construction and which may be easily attached to or detached from the collar.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A hames attachment, comprising a U- shaped rod having the stems thereof secured to the hame section, and provided with a series ofdividing tubes,and screw bolts adapted to pass through said attachment, the dividing tubes and the hame section, to form a series of openings for the reception of the 2o clip of the trace, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination with a hame having holes therethrough, of a retaining plate secured to the inner sides of said haines, and having screw threaded holes in alignment with the holes of the hames, and a U-shaped attachment having stems extending through said hames, and engaging openings in the retaining-plate and dividing tubes, and screw bolts adapted to pass through said attachment, through said dividing tubes andthe haines and engage the screw thread openings in the retaining plate, substantially as set forth.
