FENCE-POST.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 505,367, dated September 19, 1893.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known 'that I, JOSEPH D. PALDI, residing at Brockway, in the county of St. Clair and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Fence-Posts, of which the following is a specification.

My invention has .for its object to provide a simple, inexpensive and effective fence post, which will not rot or burn, and which will be of more Weight than a green wood post of proportionate size.

To these ends the invention consists, in a post formed of burnt clay or other ceramic `material provided with suitable fence wire supports having internal reinforcing wire portions.

It also consists in a fence post formedof a burnt clay body and outer metallic clamp portions bolted thereto, and provided with fence wire fastenings.

It further consists in the peculiar combination and novel construction of parts, as hereinafter rst described and then particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improvements as applied for use. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the post. Fig. 3 is a similar view taken on the line 3-3 Fig. 2. Fig. 4. is a horizontal section on the line 4-4 Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a perspective View of the clay or core portion of the post. Y

My improved fence post comprises a body portion A, composed of burnt clay, and made preferably with opposite fiat faces, as shown, it being obvious that in practice it may be round or of any desired ornamental shape.

Within the body A is held and extended from the bottom to near the top, one or more binding wires a a which may be separate wires, or one wirebent at its upper end to form a loop a', and such wires serve as reinforcing means, and also to hold the several parts of the post, should it crack or break transversely.

This post may in practicev be formed with transverse wire supporting apertures a2, as shown in Fig. 5, but as a means for adding strength and protection to such post, I arrange at opposite sides thereof metal clamp plates B B, which are secured to the body A by the bolts O which pass through the plates and the body A and are held by the nuts.

It will be noticed by reference to Fig. 4. that such bolts C pass transversely through the body A between the wires a. such arrangement providing a substantial bracing for all' four sides of the said body A.

As a convenient means for supporting the fence wires, I form one of the plates B with an outwardly extendingV longitudinal iiange b, having a series Vof aperturesA b, in which are hung twisted wire loops D, through which the wire strands E pass as clearly shown in Fig. l of the drawings.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings the advantagesA of my improvement will readily appear. The same provides for an inexpensive post, which will possess the required weight and rigidity, which will not rot, or burn, and cannot be effected by the weather.

Should the post be cracked the internal wires will effectually serve to hold the sections together, and if desired, the plates B may be made to incase the opposite sides their entire length. If desired the outer faces of the post may be glazed to further protect same against the weather.

Having thus described my' invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A fence post formed of a burnt clay body, outer metallic clamp members, bolts extending transversely through the body portion, to secure such clamp members, and the wire rods incased in said body, and extended lon- `gitudinally thereof at each side of the transverse bolts all substantially as shown and for the purposes described.

2. A fence post comprising the clay body A, the metal clamp members B, one of said members having outwardly projecting longitudinal flanges b, the Wire loops D secured to such flanges, and the fastening bolts C, all arranged substantially as shown and for the purposes described.

3. The herein described fence post, consisting of the clay body A, having the binding wires for rods 0. incased therein, the clamping plates B, one of which is provided with a longitudinal iiange b apertured to receive the loops D, and the bolts C passed through the clamping plates and body between the binding wires a, as specified.
