Be it known that I, CHARLES I-I. BAYLEY, of Boston, county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Cigar-Box Moisteners, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters and tigureson the drawings representing like parts.

Cigars are usually packed in wooden boxes, and after the lid has been opened to use the cigars the latter dry rapidly and deteriorate.

Many people are deterred from purchasing cigars by the box because if they are not consumed promptly they become too dry for satisfactory smoking. To obviate this trouble and enable a person purchasing a box of cigars to keep the same at the proper temper as regards moisture I have devised a moistening box adapted to be readily applied to an ordinary cigar box after the top layer of cigars or a portion thereof has been removed.

Figure 1 shows a cigar box with my meistening box applied, the wood of the cigar box being partially broken out. Fig. 2 is a section in the line a; Fig. 1, the dotted lines at the right of Fig. 2 showing the lid open; Fig. 3, an edge view of the moistening box pulled partially oft' its base, one side of the box being broken out; Fig. 4, an under side view of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5, asection in the line on', Fig. 4.

Referring to the drawings,otrepresents the sides of a wooden cigar box having a bottom o', and a lid 0.2, the latter being applied in manner usual to cigar boxes.

The cigars are designated by letter c.

My improved moistening box B is composed preferably of a metallic body shaped to present a bottom plate b having a series of perforations b', and having sides b2, two ofthe sides being herein shown as having tracks or lips 4t terminated preferably by stops 5. These tracks or lips are adapted to enter flanges or guides d of a base plate D, portions of said plate being cut and struck through to form` suitable attaching prongs d which may be pushed into the wood at the inner side of the lid where the latter has been opened.

AThe moistening box contains an absorbent pad e, composed of some material such as asbestus fiber, felt, or sponge, or a substance which will absorb and retain water and give it up gradually in the form of moisture or Vapor to the air in the cigar box.

To apply the moistening box some of the cigars in the first or top layer will be removed.

The stops 5 act to stop the lateral movement of the box B with relation to the base D. The base D being of metal the water carried by the pad cannot work into the wooden lid of the box.

Prior to my invention special boxes for keeping tobaccomoist have been devised, and so also moistening attachments for tobacco receptacles have been devised, but I am not aware of any prior devices having the construction herein shown and described.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The Within described moistening device comprising the base plate D having the guides d and attaching prongs d', and the box B having lips 4L to engage the guides of the base plate and provided with a perforated bottom and a moistening pad, substantially as set forth.
