MOISTENING'DEVICE.
f SPECIFITON forming part of Letters Patent No. 650,102, dated May 22, 1900.
Application tiled September l. 1898. Serial No.V 689,988. (No model.)
To aZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED TILLY, aci tizen of the United States, residing at New York, (Brooklyn,) in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements vin Moistening Devices, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art towhich it appertains to make and use th'e same.
This invention relates to moistening devices for use in moistening stamps, envelops, and other articles; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which .is simple in construction and operation and comparatively inexpensive, and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in the device hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accom panyl ing drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a plan 4view of a box or casing which I employ and showing a hinged cover, the cover beinga thrown back; and Fig. 2, a ection of the box or casing on the line 2 2 of Inthe drawings forming part of this specification the separatel parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in the practice of my invention I provide a box or casing comprising a bottom 5, sidewalls 6,
and end wallsA 7, and said box or casing isv provided with a cover 8, which is hinged to one sidethereof, as shown at 9. The box or casing 7 is also provided with a longitudinal partition-plate lO, which is provided near each end witha transverse slot or opening 11, which is formed by stamping out a strip 12, said-strips being bent downwardly, as` shown in Fig. 2, to form supports for the partitionplate 10, whereby said plate is supported at a predetermined distance above the bottom of the box or casing, and the said partitionplate 10 is also provided, centrally thereof, with a slot or opening 13, formed in a similar manner by stamping out a strip 14, which isbent downwardly in the same manner as the ,5o strips 12. By means of this construction a horizontal chamber is formed between the partition-plate lO and the bottom 5 of the box or casing, and this chamber is adapted to receive water. I also provide av strip 16 of absorbent material, preferably similar to lampwicking, and said strip is folded around thecentral portion of the partition-plate 10, the ends thereof being passed through the end slots or openings 11, as clearly shown in the drawings, and the said strip 16 covers almost This device may also be employed for moist'entng the flaps of envelops preparatory to sealing the same,I and it will thus be seen that I accomplish the object of my invention by means of a device which is simple in construction and operation and also comparatively inexpensive, and changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my inventionior sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, I claimas new and desire to secure by Letters Patentv The herein-described moistening device, comprising a box or casing provided with a horizontal partition provided with integral supports, said partition vand supports consisting of a single sheet of metal which is slotted and bent forming projections adjacent itsends and center, a strip of absorbent material laid upon said partition, the ends of said absorbent strip being passed through the slots in the ends of the partition, said partition extending from end to end of said casing and forming an upper and a lower compartment into the lower of whi'ch the ends of said absorbent strip extend and which is designed as a water-receptacle, and a strip of felt or similar material superimposed upon said absorbent strip, the relative arrange- IOO 5 compartment is insured.
