SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 505,214, dated September 19, 1893. Application filed January 19. 1893. Serial No. 459,026. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, JOHN T. BEATTY, of the city of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

The object of 'my invention is to produce improved and simple means of eifectually protecting a look from being picked by any one on the outside of the door to which it is secured.

My invention consists in a simple and efficient device for preventing the removal of a key from a look from the opposite side and to thereby prevent picking of the look.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a section of door with my lock attached, showing the escutcheon open and the keyin place. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the escutcheon open and the key closed. Fig. 3 is a similar view, showing the escutcheon closed. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal central vertical section of my lock, showing the relation of the key-wing with respect to the bolt when the key is secured on the outside, as illustrated in Fig. 2, clearly indicating the manner in which it dogs the bolt.

Referring to the figures on the drawings, 1 indicatesasection of door, and 2 a lock, which may be of any suitable ordinary construction.

3 indicates a key, which is preferably a flexible key-that is to say, a key composed of two parts hinged as indicated at 4.

5 indicates the key wing, and 6 the shank thereof.

7 indicates a case, preferably consisting of an escutcheon having arecessed bed 8 which terminates in one end in a key-hole 9. The

bed is of such shape and dimensions as to readily receive the shank of the key when turned. upon the hinge 4. In this position the case prevents the key from rotating within the key-hole. I prefer to employ a cap or cover 10, adapted to cover the case or escutcheon. It may be pivoted to the escutcheon, and may be swung over it, and thus secure the key in place, orit may be more firmly secured by any suitable means. The key is hinged in such a manner that when its shank is embedded in the case its wing is in a position to oppose its wing against the bolt in the path of its travel and positively dog the bolt. 7

The key, therefore, being irrevolubly fixed in the lock, and being set to dog the bolt, afiords a perfect security against picking the'lock. If the key did not dog the bolt an instrument might possibly be constructed which could evade the key and slip the bolt. By my invention, however, even this means of picking is prevented.

While I have illustrated and described a particular form of mechanism, I do not wish to limit myself to the details of construction; but to reserve the right to modify them and vary them at will within the scope of my invention.

What I claim is- 1. The combination with a lock and its bolt, of a flexible key, and a case adapted to hold the shank of the key when folded, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination with a lock and its bolt, of a flexible key, case, and acover for the case, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

3. The combination with an escutcheon and key bed therein, of a cover movably secured to the same, substantially as and for. the purpose specified.
