COAT AND HAT HOOK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 505,209, dated September 19, 1893. Application filed October 12, 1891. SerialNo. 408,430. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ALBERT WHITE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lowell, in the county of Middlesex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Coat and Hat Hooks, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to coat and hat hooks and consists in a coat and hat hook formed of asingle wire and having an attaching point, an upper hook, an inclined brace under said upper hook, and a lower hook, below said brace, and having a supporting point which extends rearwardly from the back of said lower hook between the ends of said Wire and is struck up from the body of said wire, substantially as hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the simplest form of a coat and hat hook constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a side elevationof the same except that the upper part of the device instead of being straight and horizontal is represented with a vertical offset.

To form my improved coat and hat hook a wire WV, straight in the firstinstance, of suitable diameter and length is pointed at one end, at a, to form an attaching-point, and near said point may be provided with barbs a which hook in the opposite direction from that in which the point extends to allow said point and barbs to be forced or driven into a wall or othersuitable support and to prevent the withdrawal of said point from such support. From the attaching point a the wire extends horizontally in a hook formed of wire and having a supporting-point which extends rearwardly from the back thereof, between the ends of the wire and is struck up from the body of said wire, and also forward in a straight line, at A, for a considerable distance and is then bent upward and forward, at b, and looped downward to or neartothe under side of the horizontal part A, toform a hat hook B. From the hat hook B the wire extends backward and downward, preferably in a straight line to form an inclined brace O and, at d, is bent vertically downward to form a suitable back D to rest against the vertical supporting wall or surface. Below the back D from the point ethewireis curved forward and upward to form a coat hook E and the end portion of the wire is curved downward, at e, to form a suitable bearing for a coat or other garment or article, the extreme end of the wire, at 8 being rounded, to prevent piercing and tearing articles suspended thereon. All the parts of the above-described hook are represented as lying in the same vertical plane.

The above described construction is not essentially new, the novelty of my invention consisting mainly in the supporting-point F, which is formed by cutting into the wire, as with a chisel, to form a long barb or point at the back of the part D, said point F being then bent backward horizontally. The under side of the point B is flat and when driven into the supporting-wall prevents the sagging of the lower hook E and also prevents the turning of the hook laterally aboutits attaching-point.

If desired, the upper part A of the hook, instead of being straight, as shown in Fig. 1, may have a vertical offset a in a well known manner, adapted to, be struck by a hammer to assist in securing the device to its support.

I claim as my invention- 1. A hook formed of wire and havingasupporting-point which extends rearwardly from the back thereof, between the ends of the wire and is raised from the body of said wire, as and for the purpose specified.

2. A coat and hat hook formed of wire and having an attaching-point, an upper book, an inclined brace under said upper hook and a lower hook, below said brace, and having a supporting'point which extends rearwardly from the back of said lower hook between the ends of said Wire and is raised from the body of said wire, as and for the purpose specified.
