H 'ql J f1' J C l INVENTOR ArTo RNE? UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IDA M. REW, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BUSTHSUPPORTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 505,003, dated September 12, 1893i. Application filed January 19, 1893K. Serial No. 459,034. (No model.)
To @ZZ wiz/0m t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, IDA M. REW, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bust-Supporters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a bust supporter for ladies use with the lower edge encircling the person just below the bust line, made without stiffness and which does not exert any pressure upon the lower chest, permits deep or diaphragmatic breathing, prevents attenuation of the lung tissue, collapse of the chest walls and in consequence hollow chestedness and round shoulders. An ordinary corset or stiffly boned waist exerts a great pressure upon the lower chest and over the sensitive region of the stomach, to relieve which that portion of the person is drawn inward causing the shoulders of the wearer to incline forward, entailing great distress and permanent injury, which my invention, obviously, very effectually prevents.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a front view embodying inyinvention. Fig. 2 represents a rear View thereof. Fig. 3 represents an inside view of side piece showing portion pf pocket for stiffener broken away. Fig. 4 is a side view. Fig. 5 represents a section of bust receptacle. v
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The letters A B indicate the two sections of the bust supporter which are composed of the front parts O and the rear parts D joined together at their upper portions by t-he shoulder parts E and at their sides and backs by elastic webbing lacers G H, while the front sections are provided with suitable hooks I to receive elastic lacers to fasten them together. The front parts C opposite the busts are made of a shape to conform to the general configuration of the bust of the wearer by means of a semi-circular stiffener .I which extends from left to right under the lower portion of the bust, affording a firm and comfortable support thereto; which sti ffener J is inserted in a pocket I extending at approximately right angles to the inside of the bust portion, and is formed by being sewed to the curved edges of the pieces forming the bust portions of the front piece C. The bust portions proper are formed of elliptic-lanceolate shaped pieces of fabric K and the armi portion L which being united by sewing their curved edges together form, with the stifteners J a hollow or dish shaped bust receptacle M, (Fig. 4.) of a shape corresponding to the outline of the bust and effectually supporting and holding the bust under and over its entire surface. The front portions O by being made low on their upper edges and gradually curving upward to the right and left from the line of the front lacers, with the lower edges encircling the person just below the bust line, and constructed without stieners, except the stiffener J, do not exert any pressure upon the lower chest and over the region of the stomach, permits deep or diaphragmatic breathing, prevents attenuation of the lung tissue, collapse of the chest walls and in consequence hollow chestedness and round shoulders. Moreover the length of the shoulder portions of the girdle are adjusted by the elastic side lacers under the arms, which readily conforms to the high or low shoulders of the wearer by being raised o1' lowered as the figure of the wearer demands.
To the proper place of the front and rear portions are attached garment supporting straps N depending loosely therefrom and which may be provided with buttons O at their ends and which are united to a lbelt P having on one end a buckle Q to fasten the same; while to the side portions of the girdle are attached V-shaped straps R for attaching thereto hose supporters by means of buttons or otherwise.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Lett-ers Patent, is-
A bust supporter consisting of two sections composed of a front part rear part and shoulder part, and having the front part provided with a bust receptacle formed of the elliptically-shaped strip K inserted in the out away portion in the front section of the supporter, which strip has the curved stiffener secured thereto at its point of union with the curved edge of the front section where cut away, substantially as shown and described.
