witme/ww OIL CAN.
Patented Sept. 12, 1893.
, WA QM M M 912mm UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID A. LISK, OF CLIFTON SPRINGS, AND TRISTRAM D. BROWN, OF
CANANDAIGUA, NEW YORK.
OlL-CAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 504,788, dated September 12, 18939 Application filed January 28. 1893. Serial No. 459,979. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, DAVID A. LIsK, of Clifton Springs, and TRISTRAM D. BROWN, of Canandaigna, county of Ontario, State of New York, citizens of the United States, have invented a certain new, useful, and valuable Improvement in Oil-Cans, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Our invention has relation to oil cans, pivoted in a suitable case and adapted to be transported from place to place with ease, convenience and safety. The can is constructed in such manner that it is impossible to lose any oil by evaporation.
In the accompanying drawing's:Figure 1, is a perspective view of the can and case. Fig. 2, is a sectional view of the can and case.
The invention is described as follows:-
1, represents the case in which is pivotally supported the can 2, having the discharge spout 3.
4, designates a vent tube which is secured to the can and follows the shape or contour of the body thereof, one end 5, of said vent tube leading into the can, while the other end 6, leads into the discharge spout 3.
In the end of the discharge spout 3, is a partition 7, which regulates the fiow of the oil from the outlet 8. The extreme end of the discharge spout 3, is adapted to engage a stopper 9. Said stopper is secured to the case 1, and is provided with the universal joint 10, and the under face of the stopper is provided with the soft backing 11. Thus it will be seen that the stopper closes the discharge spout 3, and by means of the universal joint the said stopper can assume any angle necessary to close the said spout. The oil is introduced into the can through the inlet 12. When it is desired to draw oil out of the can it is tilted forward as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 2, and when sufticient oil is drawn the can will assume the position shown in the heavy lines automatically. This is accomplished by eccentrically pivoting the can in the case. The case is provided in its top with a suitable handle 13, and in front with a suitable door 1%.
Having described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Adevice for closing the spout of a pivoted can, consisting of a stopper located in the path of the spout of said pivoted can, a universal join? having one member thereof secured to a stationary support and its other member pendent and secured to and supporting said stopper, as set forth.
In testimonywhereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
