GEORGE E. IVITHERELL, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE HARTFORD MACHINE SCREW COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
CLUTCHING MECHANISM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 504,770, dated September 12, 1893.
Application filed January 19, 1893. $erial No. 458,917- (No model.)
T at whom it may concern.- direction or in opposite directions at the same Be it known that I, GEORGE E. WITHERELL, or at difierent speeds.
of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and In the accompanying drawings the lettero;
State of Connecticut, have invented certain denotes the spindle that is supported in bear new and useful Improvements in Clutching ings b in the frame I). A loose pulley c is 55 Mechanism, of which the following is a full, mounted on the shaft and preferably arranged clear, and exact description, whereby any one next to the bearing, the hub c afiording a skilled in the art can make and use the same. proper lateral bearing forthe pulley. On one The object of my invention is to provide side of the pulley 0 there is formed a socket 0 means for driving a shaft in any desired diin which a split ring (1 forming part of the 60 rection and at varying speeds and to this end clutch mechanism is located. This ring is semy invention consists in the details of the cured at one or more points to the disk ethat several parts making up the clutch device as fits closel'y within an expanding ring located a whole and in the combination of such parts in the socket 0 The hub of this disk is seas more particularly hereinafter described cured to the shaft as by means of a clamping 6 and pointed out in the claims. screw c extending through the hub on the Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a dedisk and engaging the shaft so that the disk tail view in side elevation of part of a screw and shaft will move together. On the shaft cutting machine that embodies my invention. there is also supported asliding collarg which Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken on a hasa limited reciprocating movement and is 70 vertical plane passing through the axis of provided with projecting arms g that extend spindle a in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail viewin through openings 6 in the disk, one set of the cross section through the device on plane dearms having sockets a into which the end of noted by line 06% of Fig. 1 and looking toa toggle-arm h projects. This collar has an ward the right. Fig. 4 is a detail view in annular groove g formedin its periphery and 75 cross section through the clutch parts lookadapted to receive the forked end of ashifter ing toward the left. Fig. 5 is a detail view on lever by means of which this clutch part may enlarged scale showing the adjacent ends of be moved lengthwise of the shaft. The split a split ring with part cut away to show conring cl fits snugly within the socket c in the struction. Fig. 6 is a detail end view of the side of the pulley and is so arranged that when 80 eccentric pivot of the cam. Fig. 7 is a detail expanded it will grasp the pulley with a firm side view of the same. Fig. 8 is a detail plan hold. view of the locking ring. Fig. 9 is a detail The expanding device comprises a cam edge view of the same. Fig.10is atransverse block t pivoted to the end of the ring at one section taken on theliney-y of Fig. 1, showside of the opening d and having an end 85 ing a face view of the fixed ring and the bearing a cam 2", the surface of which enclutching mechanism co-operating therewith. gages the cam surface d formed on the oppo- In the within drawings and specification site end of the split ring. This cam block is my invention is shown and described as emmounted on an eccentric 3'' formed midway of bodied in part of a screw machine in which the pin j, one end of which fits a socket in 0 the object is to drive the work holding spinthe ring on one side of the block/while the dle forward with a fast motion, then to con other extends through a locking ring that tinue the forward motion of the spindle with is seated in a threaded socket in the side of a slow motion, and after that to drive it in a the split ring cl and on the opposite side of the 5 reverse direction with a fast motion in order block. This pin is tape red so as to fit a ta- 5 to accomplish a special work to be done on pered perforation in the'nut. The object of the machine. Myimprovement is equally apthis construction is to enable the center of the plicable, however, without material change pivot which supports the cam block to be set to any shaft to which it is desired to give a at any distance within the throw of the eerotary movement at different speeds in one centric from that end of the ring which bears 10o the cam surface. This adj ustability of the cam block enables the degree of expansion of the ring by the sliding movement of the collar to be nicely adjusted. The cam block is operated by a toggle h that is pivoted to the back of the block and has its opposite end in engagement with the socket in the arm g of the sliding collar g. A similar arrangement of clutch parts is connected to the pulley f, the sockets in these respective pulleys c, f, being formed in adjacent sides of the pulley, the sliding collar operating to engage the pulley c at one end of its sliding movement and the pulley f at the other end of its play. The hub of the disk appurtenant to the clutch mechanism of the loose pulley f is clamped to theshaft by the set screw 6 so as to turn with it. The pulley c is normally driven at a rate of speed in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 1 that will cause it when connected tothe shaft to drive the latter forward with a fast motion. The pulley f is driven normally in a reverse direction and at a speed that will cause it when clutched to the spindle a togive the latter a fastmotion except when the movement of this latter pulley is translated and reduced by means of a system of gears. A sleeve Z is arranged on the spindle, its hub being secured to the hub of the pulley f as by means of a key Z so that the sleeve will be driven with the pulley f. 011 the outer end of this sleeve is a pinion Z the teeth projecting from the surface of the sleeve aslight distancesufficient to form a shoulder between which and the face of the pulley f the hub m of a disk m is held, but free to revolve on the sleeve. A fixed ring 0?. is secured to the bed I) and within this ring is arrangeda split ring 77. similar in construction to the one already described as forming part of the clutch mechanism appurtenant to the pulleys cl and f. The disk m may be clamped to the ring or through the medium of the expanding ring n by a sliding movement of a collar 0 that is loosely mounted on the hub m of the disk at and is engaged with the ring at by means of a toggle lever h. An annular gear 19 having teeth upon the inside, as shown in Fig. 4: of the drawings, is arranged so as to overhang the pinion Z and leave an annular space between the two gears. This annular gear is secured to or forms part of a disk 19, the hub of which is keyed to the spindle a by a key if so as to turn with it. Intermediate gears q are mounted on the disk m on pins or pivots q with their teeth engaging the annular gear 10 and the teeth of the pinion Z When the \disk on is clamped to the fixed ring by means of the shifting device 0 operated by any convenient form of shifting lever it will be anchoredto the fixed ring 02 through the instrumentality of the toggle h, cam block 2' and the split ring an. and thus hold the intermediate gear gin a fixed position with respect to the axis of the spindle a. The result of this will be that the pinion Z which is driven in the same direction as the pulley j" will turn the intermediate gears in a reverse direction owing to the fact that the disk on which these gears are pivoted is held fast against any turning movement. The intermediate gears q gearing into the annular gear 1) drive the latter in a reverse direction or in the same direction as that in which the pinion turns and as this annular gear 19 is secured to the spindle it will drive the latter in the same direction but with a slower speed. As the pulley f turns in a reverse direction to the pulleyc it will be seen that this slow motion of the spindle a is in a reverse motion and at a slower speed than is the motion given to the spindle a by means of the pulley o. By unclutching the disk at by a reverse motion of the shifter collar 0 the spindle-a is released and it may be then driven forward with a fast motion by the operation of the clutching mechanism appurtenant to the pulley f, that is, by moving the sleeve gso as to cause the clutching'mechanism to clamp the pulley f to the disk appurtenant of the clutch mechanism of that pulley, the hub of said disk being secured to the spindle a. as by means of the clamping screw 6' that passes through it into the spindle. The spindle dis idle and not affected by this driving mechanism of course when the several clutch devices are disengaged.
In the accompanying drawings the device is shown with parts arranged so as to drive the spindle in a reverse direction with a fast motion.
I claim as my invention- 1. In combination with a spindle and its bearings, mechanism for driving the spindle with a variable speed and comprising a loose pulley mounted on the shaft and driven in one direction, a second loose pulley mounted on the shaft and driven in a reverse direc-- tion, the clutch mechanisms as described ap purtenant to the pulleys, a sleeve secured to one of the pulleys and turning with it and havingon its outer end a pinion, an annular gear fixed on a disk secured to the spindle, a fixed ring appurtenant to the annular gear the disk of the clutch mechanism appurtenant to the fixed ring supporting an interme diate gear located between the annular gear and the pinion and the clutch mechanism appurtenant to the fixed ring, all substantially as described.
2. In combination with a spindle and its bearings two loose pulleys mounted on the shaft and driven normally in opposite directions, clutch mechanisms located between the adjacent faces of the pulleys and adapted to clamp either of them to the shaft a shifter ring that is arranged in operative connection with the clamping parts of the clutch device, a sleeve bearing a pinion secured to one of the pulleys and turning with it and the described mechanism including a fixed ring and clutch and the annular and intermediate gears whereby the rotary movement of the pulley bearing the sleeve and pinion is reduced in speed, all substantially as described.
3. In a clutch mechanism the combination of an expanding ring, a cam block pivoted to one end of the ring on one side of the open ing and having on the outer end a cam face cooperating with a cam formed on the end of the ring on the opposite side of the opening, and an eccentric pivot hinging the cam block to the ring, all substantially as described.
4. In combination in a clutch mechanism, an expanding-ring, a pivot-pin bearing an eccentric arranged across a socket in one end GEORGE E. WITHERELL.
