Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEG JOHN B. GHORMLEY, OF BELLEFONTAINE, OHIO.
WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification forming part of Letters PatentNo. 50,464, dated October 17, 1865.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN B. GHORMLEY, of Bellefontaine, inthe county of Logan and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Washing-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the d rawings which accompany and form part of this specification.
My invention relates to a slatted cylinder, partly contained in an outer case or box in which water is held, and having within the cylinder-a similar cylinder of smaller dimensions, so arranged that as the rst or main cylinder is rotated the inner cylinder rolls around on the inner face ofthe first, acting as a rubber and compressor, whereby the garments or fabrics acted upon in the operation are thoroughly and expeditiously cleansed.
Referring, now, to the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of my improved machine. Fig. 2 is a vertical section.
A is the outer case or tub in which water is contained.
B is the outer cylinder'supported appropriately on shaft a, journnled in the side pieces of the case A.
C is the inner cylinder, which is free to rotate and presses upon the garments contained in the outer cylinder, rolling over them as the latter is rotated.
b is a cranl; and handle secured to shaft a, to give motion tocylinders B and G.
c c are doors for the introduction and removal of fabrics to be washed or cleansed. These are hinged and furnished with appropriate fastenings.
d d are small hooks to which a corner of fabrics may be attached while they are being washed. These serve to prevent the fabrics, if large and unwieldy, from rolling up into a mass, and causes them to remain extended around the inner face of the outer cylinder exposed to the action of the inner cylinder or roller. The slats c of both the outer and inner cylinder are Vshaped, those of the outer cylinder being so placed as to present the angle inwardly, and those of the inner cylinder presenting the angle outwardly, the arrangement being' such that fabrics while being washed are held between and exposed to the rubbing,
compressing, and concussive action of surfaces, consisting, as represented, ot series of angles. This facilitates the operation of washing without the employment of a force which would be more laborious, and be attended with more injury and violence to the garments or fabrics.
The operation of my machine will be understood from the description which has been given without further explanation.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
The combination of the slatted cylinders B and G and hooks d, constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
JOHN B. GHORMLEY.
