Description
{No Model.) J-
WATER COOLER.
N0.'504,585. Patented Sept. 5, 1893.
A TTOR/VEY5,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH HYHANS, 0F DEL RIO, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO GODFRIED LAUBE, OF HURON, SOUTH DAKOTA.
WATER-COOLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 504,585, dated September 5, 1893.
Application filed March 20, 1893.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH HYMANS, acitizen of the United States of America, residing at Del Rio, in the county of Val Verde and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ater-Coolers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to portable water coolers, and particularly to that class in which the water is refrigerated by the action of the air and the evaporation of the liquid or vapor percolating the material.
The object of the invention is to produce in a device of this class, means whereby water may be cooled without the use of ice, which in many localities and especially in the rural districts cannot be secured; furthermore, to provide in a water cooler, a device that shall be simple in construction, eflicient and satisfactory in use as well as comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
The invention consists finally in various novel details of construction, arrangements and combinations of parts, hereinafter to be more particularly described and pointed out in the claim.
\Vith these objects in view, the invention consists in a receptacle or trough, mounted on suitable supports, with its ends constructed of wood or other suitable material.
To these ends and forming the trough proper is secured closely woven canvas, or other porous productions, which will allow the water to pass through it in limited quantities, thus causing the outer surface to become damp after which evaporation of the liquid or vapor on the outer surface will begin, and this with the action of the air will cool the water.
In describing my invention in detail, reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, wherein like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views, in which-- Serial No. 466,776. (No model.)
Figure 1. is a view in side elevation. Fig. 2. is an end view of the same, and Fig. 3. is a vertical sectional View on the line w, :c, of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, A, indicates the porous material forming the trough proper, a, a, the ends to the edges of which are secured porous material, by means of the straps a which hold it securely and prevent the ends from tearing out. The cross pieces a and a are also provided, between which the material is securely fastened and held in place. On the outer side of the ends spindle a is attached, which in turn engages with the Vertical supports 1), I), mounted on suitable base portions 0, c.
The operation of the device will be obvious from the foregoing description; and it will be particularly noted that various changes may be made in the detail construction of the device without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an improved article of manufacture, a water cooler consisting of a U-shaped receptacle formed of canvas or other suitable porous material, having wooden ends, the cross pieces connecting said ends, and between which the canvas is secured, the straps holding the canvas to the ends, a rod passing through the ends and engaging the uprights of the frame, being swingingly mounted therein, the base portion and the braces,'substan-' tially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH HYMANS.
Witnesses:
S. J. CONNOR, Mrs. JOSEPH I-IYMANs.
