PETER MCBRIDE, OF NEW YORK, n. Y.
lMPROVEMENT lN REFRlGERATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 115,879, dated J une 13, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER MCBRIDE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Re and I do hereby declare that the following'is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the. art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forut ing part of this specification, in which- Figure'l 1s a detail vertical section of my improved refrigerator. Fi 2 is a top view of the same, the cover being removed.v
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention hasjor its object to furnish a simple, convenient, eti'ective, andiuexpensive refrigerator for cooling water, and cooling and preserving other articles that may require to. and itconsisfs in the construc tion and combination of the various parts of the refrigerator, as h ereinatter more fully described.
A is the outer ease or box of the refrigera tor, which is made of Wood and rectangular in form. The upper edge of the box or case A has a groove formed in it. in which is placed rubber or other packing or, upon which the cover B rests, and which thus makes the box or case A air-tight.' The cover B is hinged upon one side to the edge of the box or case A, so that it may be conveniently opened and closed. Upon the centerof the bottom of the box or case A is placed a disk or washer, 0, upon which is placed the bottom of the cylindrical case D, the disk 0 being made considerably smaller than the circular bottom of the case D, and only large enough to firmly and securely support the said case D. Upon the center of the bottom of the case D is placed a disk orwasher, E, upon which the bottom of the inner case F rests. The disk E is made considerably smaller than the bottom of the case F, being only large enough to firmly and securely support. the said case. The case F is made smaller than the case D, so as to leave a space all around between the said cases to receive water to be cooled. The cases A D F and disk 0 E are secured to each other and heldiu their properrelativepositionsby screws, bolts, or other convenient and suitable means. G is' a ring, of such a size as to fit into the space between the cases D F, and which is made with a. narrow flange around the top of its side edges to rest upon the upper edges of the casesl) F to hold the said ring in place. A part of the ring G may be cut away for convenience in pouring in the water. The case F serves as anice-box to receive the ice, and is designed to ha-ve fianges or cleats formed upon orattached to its sides to receive racks to support the articles to be cooled or preserved. The cleats and racks are not shown in the drawing. H is a stopcock or faucet heading out through the sides of the cases D and A, to enable the water to be drawn off as may be desired. 1 is a pipe leading down through the bottoms of the cases F D A to allow the drip or Water from the ice to escape into a receptacle placed beneath the refrigerator to receive The space between the cases A and D is de-' signed to be filled with sawdust or other suitable non-conductin g material to prevent the Water from being warmed from the surrounding air. The cases D and F are designed to be made of zinc. or other suitable sheet metal, and are made cylindrical inform, as being cheaper and more convenient in construct-ion. The outer Wooden case'A is made rectangular in form for the samereason.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- An improved refrigerator, formed by the combination of the rectangular Wooden case A, cylindrical concentric sheet-metal cases D F, dislss or washers C E, ring G,"cover B, stopcook or faucet H, and Waste-pipe I, said parts being constructed and arranged substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
