Description

S. R. BROOKS. HORSESHOE UALK SHARPENER.
(No Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
SIDNEY RODGERS BROOKS, OF ALLEGANY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO HENRY HASKINS, OF FREWSBURG, NEW YORK.
HORSESHOE-CALK SHARPENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 504,553, dated September 5, 1893.
Application filed February 4, 1893. Serial No. 460,954. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIDNEY RODGERS BROOKS, acitizen of theUnited States, residing at Allegany, in the county of Catta-raugus and State ofNew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horseshoe-Oalk Sharpeners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The present invention has for its object to provide a simple and practical tool or device for sharpening the calks of horse-shoes without removing them from the hoof, and the invention consists in the several details of construction substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of my improved device; Fig. 2 a longitudinal section thereof; Fig. 3 a transverse section of Fig.1 lookingin the direction of the arrow; Fig. at a detail view of the end bracket.
In the accompanying drawings A and B represent two files having four sides or filing surfaces, said files having their respective ends connected to the clamp O and bracket D. A brace-rod E connects the clamp and bracket together and is screw threaded upon one or both of its ends to engage with screw threaded holes in the clamp and bracket, so that either or both maybe removable from the rod and adjustable thereon so that the distance between the two may be increased or diminished or in other words adjusted to adapt the device to files of different lengths.
The clamp C may be of any desirable construction and consists of clamping sections a b detachably connected together by screws 0 and nuts (I, or by any other well known means that will admit the two sections to be separated to allow the ends of the files to be placed between them and firmly held thereby.
The clamp O is provided with a suit-able handle F detachably and removably connected thereto by screw and nut or by any other suitable and well known means, said handle extending horizontally as shown. The bracket D is also provided with a handle as shown at G which handle is upright or vertical or at a right angle to the handle F, and is also detachable so that the handles can change places if found desirable.
The clamp and also the bracket are provided with suitable seats for the ends of the files, said bracket also having inwardly extending supporting flanges c. This form of bracket admits the ends of the files being disconnected therefrom without the necessity of removing the bracket or the clamp from the brace-rod.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A horse-shoe calk sharpener, consisting of a longitudinal brace rod, aclamp and a bracket independent of each other and adjustably and removably connected to the respective ends of the rod, files held by the clamp and bracket, and handles removably connected thereto, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
SIDNEY RODGERS BROOKS.
