Be it known that I, CARL AUGUST AMBRO- sIUs, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Forms for Stair-Builders and other Woodworkers; and I do hereby declare the follow ing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had" of reference marked thereon, which" form a other purpose; to enable-with one appliance or apparatus various and different forms to be obtained over which the wood may be bent; to facilitate the work of changing theform over which the wood is bent from one shape to another, and to secure other advantages and results, some'of which may be referred to hereinafter in connection with the descrip tion of the working parts.

are radiating arms connectedintegrally by segments 0 c, the said radiating arms extending from the center of saidframe or body with which the said segments are-concentric to points outside of or beyond the convex sides of said segments. The said arms at their extremities are preferably provided with clamping means, whereby the wood to be bent may; be held against the form, as hereinafter described.
The segments 0 c are provided with curved slots d, and the arms I; are longitudinally The said slots (1 ande have adjustable posts f therein, which are adapted to be set within said slots by nut-s g or by any other suitable means, and the said posts f extend laterally or Vertically from the segmentsc and arms I) and at or near their projecting extremities are threaded to receive screws h. Said posts are preferably in sections, of which the section f of each is adapted to be rigidly clamped to the frame or body a by the said nut g and provides a box or pivotal bearing for the section f having the threaded seatf for its screw h, thus permitting a free and easy turning or automatic adjustment of said section f and its screw. Said screws hare each provided at one end with a head 1', Figs. 3 and 4, which is arranged in a swiveled socket j, as indicated in Figs. 3, 4, and 5. The said-sockets inturn are pivoted, as at 70, upon eyes'l. The said eyes are arranged at uniform distances along'one side of a flexible form an, the said flexible form being preferably of sheet or strap-like steel.

form a greater number of eyes than screws, whereby the said screws to meet certain conditions can be pivoted upon one or another of said eyes to secure the desired shapes.
The flexible form m is adapted to be bent into a semicircle, as in Fig. 1, or it may have an ogee curve, as in Fig. 5, or the curvatures and shapes may be varied indefinitely to suit desired shape, the wood in the form of veneer, thin boards, or strips is covered with glue at the outer side and is then bent over the outer side of the form or the side opposite the side having eyes Z. A second strip of wood is then applied to the first, the second strip having received a proper application of glue, and the said boards or strips thus bent andlaid against oneanotherare clamped against the said flexible form by means of the clamps applied to or arranged in connection with the arms 1), although I may employ in some' cases independent clamps such as are commonly found in a carpeuters or stair builders shop. The clamps preferred, however, consist each of a sliding clamp-jaw it, carried by an arm 0, arranged on a screw p, having a crank 1', by which it may be conveniently turned. The cranks 0' are arranged in ears or bearings 2, formed at or near the extremities of the arms I), so that by turning the crank r the screw carries the sliding clamp-jaw thereon from or against the outer side of the glued wood, in the latter case pressing the strips together against the form m, as will be understood.
After the two strips have been glued and clamped and the glue having dried a third strip maybe similarly attached to the first two, and this may be repeated as often as necessary to secure the desired thickness of bent wood.
After making the several applications of layers of wood and the drying of the glue the bent wood may be removed from the device,
when it will be found to retain the desired shape.
When I desire to secure the ogee curve of Fig. 5, I employ in connection with the frame (0 a slotted and curved arm t, Figs. 5 and 6, which is braced to the central arm of the frame by means of a pivotal brace uand is pivotally connected at z to a segment of the frame. The brace a is adjustable in relation to the said central arm by means of a series of perforations r and a pin w. The said arm 2. is provided with posts f, in which the screws 7b are arranged, and is swiveled upon a swivelsocket attached to the inner side of the flexible form.
To hold the central part of the flexible form on down upon the frame a, the central arm of the frame is preferably slotted, as at 1), Figs. 6 and 7, the slot being similar to adovetailed slot, and the said form an contiguous to the said slot 1) is provided with a headed arm or extension b the head of which lies in the larger interior portion of the slot, thereby holding the said flexible form down firmly upon or close to the frame. In connection with the contiguous oradjacent screw e the said arm b gives firmness to the said form upon the frame.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is- 1. The combination with the frame a, having longitudinally-slotted radiating arms provided with posts adjustablein the slots thereof, of screws arranged in said posts, and a flexible form loosely connected to said screws, the said form being adapted to be changed in shape when the said screws are turned, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with a frame having segments with curved slots, of a flexible form over which wood may be bent, screws connected to said form and arranged in adjustable beariugs, said bearings being arranged in said curved slots and the said form being adapted to be changed in shape by the turning of said screws, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination with a frame having arms integrally connected by a segmental part, said frame being slotted in said segment and arms, adjustable posts or studs arranged in said slots, screws arranged in said posts or studs and having heads arranged in pivoted swivel connections, eyes for the pivoted swivel connections, arranged on a flexible form and said flexible form, substantially as set forth.
4. The improved form for stair-builders, comprising a frame having radiating arms I), b, I), each of which is longitudinallyslotted and certain of which are each at its end provided with a bearing for a clamp-screw 19, said arms being connected by slotted segments 0, c, adjusting-screws h, arranged on adjustable studs or posts in the slgts of the arms and segments, said studs having means for holding the same in said slots, connections for connecting the said adjusting-screws to the flexible form, and said flexible form, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination with the frame and flexible form of an arm i, carrying adjusting-screws loosely attached to said form and a brace connecting the frame and arm to hold the latter in place, substantially as set forth.
6. The combination with the frame and flexible form connected to said frame at one end of a slotted arm t, and adjusting-screws connected to said form and arranged in studs adjustably fastened in the slot of said arm, and a brace u, for holding said arm in fixed relation to said frame, substantially as set forth.
7. The combination with the frame and flexible form connected at one end to said frame, of an arm t, pivoted at one end upon said frame and held rigidly thereto byabrace said arm being provided with adjustingscrews connected to said form, substantially as set forth.
