GATE-HINGE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Tatent No. 504,451, dated September 5, 1893. Application filed February '7, 1893- Serial No. 461,828- (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, CHARLES M. LAMB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Adrian, in the county of Lenawee and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gate-Hinges, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to provide gate hinges which shall perform all the ordinary functions of such devices, and also permit within certain li mits ready vertical adj nstment of the gate without requiring movement of the hinge.

'My invention will be readily understood from the following description, reference belng had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a gate provided with my improved hinges; and Fig. 2, a detail view in perspective.

While my improved hinges are applicable to any gate they are especially intended for use in connection with .a gate of the kind shown in the drawings. In this gate A represents a gate frame consisting of a rod bent to an approximate quadrangle, one of the sides of which constitutes the pintle-bar for the hinges. As shown the frame is braced by diagonal Wires or rods B, held at the corners by struck-up portionst of the frame, and is provided with wire mesh 0. Both the lower and upper hinges are bent spirally at their outer ends to form an elongated collar 8 to receive the pintle-bar of the gate, and they areprovided with means for securing them firmly to the gate-post. The preferred construction is that shown in the drawings, in which each hinge D consists of a screw-bolt having the spiral part 5 upon its outer end, and provided with nuts 1' to hold it firmly in place when passed through the gate-post. Acting in connection with one of the hinges, usually the lower one, is the device for permitting vertical adjustment of the gate, consisting of the collar E, encompassing the pintle-bar F, and provided with a set screw q for securing it rigidly at any point thereon. This device forms the subject of a separate application by me for a patent, viz., tember 18, 1891. In agate of the form shown the collar E, if integral, as is preferable, should be applied in the course of manufacture, and be permanent upon the pintle-bar; but the spiral collar upon the hinges permits the latter to be separate detached parts. It will be seen that in hanging the gate the spiral hinges may be readily applied to the pintle, and that after both have been secured in place to the gate-post the gate can not be released from them.

The simplicity of construction and security of my gate hinge are among-its chief advantages.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. Agate hinge, comprising in combination, a spiral collar 8 to receive the pintle-bar, and means for attaching the spiral collar to a gatepost, substantially as described.

2. The gate hinge D, consisting of a screw bolt, having the spiral collar 8 to receive the pintle-bar, and nutsr for securing it to a gatepost, substantially as described.
