TAG-ATTACHING IMPLEMENT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 504,280, dated August 29, 1893.

To all whom it mag concern} Be it known that I, JAMES T. REED, of Correctionville, in the county of W'oodbury and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tag-Attaching Implements; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference'being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in tag attaching implements; and it consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully described hereinafter, and more particularly referred to in the claims.

The object of my invention is to provide an improved implement for attaching tags to the ears of cattle for the purpose of marking them.

Referring to the accompanying drawings,- Figure 1 isa perspective view of myimproved implement when open. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same when closed. Figs. 3 and 4 are perspective views of the jaws detached. Fig. 5 is a detached view of the rivet splitting knife.

A, designates the upper jaw of the implement and B, the lower jaw, the same being secured together in the usual manner by a rivet or pin 0, acting as a pivot. The jaw B, is formed with a depression D, so that in attaching the tag to the animals ear in the manner presently to be explained the latter may be drawn into the implement by occupying this depression thus securing for the tag a firm hold on the thicker and more solid portion of the ear and at a place where it will not be liable to tear out.

Secured to the under face of the jaw A, is the forked spring plate F, adapted to receive a rivet and hold the same with its head clamped between the said plate and the jaw. As will be seen it may be easily slipped into place and the plate being formed of spring metal serves to hold it there.

The lower jaw B, is formed with a recess G,

at its center and secured to the surface of the said jaw is the forked plate 1-1, and on top of this plate is the cap holding spring I, which is shown so that when the latter approaches by thefcontraction of the jaws it will enter the said cap. The space between the forks of plate H is wider than recess G, see Figs. 1 and 2, so that cap K rests directly on the upper surface of jaw B, being held thereon from lateral movement by the forks of plate H, and confined thereon from vertical displacement by plate I. The cap is thus fixedly held so as take the rivet E when brought thereto.

Within the recess G, is the removable knife J algainst which the end of the rivet strikes aftier passing through the cap K, splitting its end so that when the implement is removed the cap will be held in place and only a little further flattening of the rivet will be required to make the hold of the cap very secure.

When it is desired to place a tag the rivet E, is put in position in the implement with a tag penetrated or held in any suitable manner thereby, after which the device is adj usted to the ear to be tagged and the operation completed as above described. If desired the rivet head may be suitably marked thus constituting it a distinguishing mark and disposing entirely with the tag.

The implement is most simple in construction and the splitting of the rivet end and separating the split portions is of decided advantage in that the tool may be removed after placing the rivet without danger of the latter dropping off before the permanent clinching of the same is effected.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,

1. An implement of the class described comprising two pivot-ally connected jaws, the lower jaw being formed with a recess in its upper face, forked plate H secured to said face with its forks arranged adjacent said recess, the space between the forks being wider than the recess for the purpose stated, a means for holding a rivet cap located between said forks from vertical displacement, a rivet splitadapted to hold the cap of the rivet as ting mechanism carried by the lower jaw, and a rivet carrying mechanism on the upper jaw, substantially as shown and described.
