' To all whom it may concern:
l, izen of the United States,
Lake City, in the county of and State of Utah, have invented new and useful Combination-Pliers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ticularly to a combination tool which will punch a hole in an animals and will secure an ear tag passed through said hole.
The chief object of the invention is to provide a single tool which will do th worlr of two withoutany unnecessary complication of its parts. Another object is to prev 1de an instrument for securing ear tags which cannot pinch the car. A further object is to provide a tool which will punch clean cut. holes of the desired shape and size and will then clench the tag in place without 11GQSS1- Re it known that a c1 Salt pliers, and partating renio *al of the tool. it is also an aim of the invention to produce an ear punch which will not become dulled readily and. will therefore have long life.
The above and other objects attained by the embodiment of the invention 1llustrated in the accconipanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and described in detail below. it will be understood that the present disclosure is illustrative in character, and that many changes may be made in the construction ofthe device without departing from the spiritand scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.

The numeral 10 designates one of the lever arms of the pliers and 11 denotes the other arm. A flat spring 12 of ordinary construction is secured to one arm and bears against the other to normally maintain the pliers open .as shown'in' Fig. 2. The arms are Specificati0n of Letters Patent.

the plate can swing in its own plane about" 18 as a axis. At one end the plate 17 carries a downwardly projecting upsetting block or anvil 19 while at its opposite end it carries a hollow punch 20. Thus when the plate is swung on its axis, first the one then the other of the two elements just described is placed in working position; Th'e'block has a flat working face and is considerably shorter than punch 20, so that the latter encounters the lower jaw well in advance of the block (see Figs. 1 and 2).
The hollow punch is of a peculiar shape, being like a flattened ellipse or rounded oblong at its cutting end and having a beveled edge 21, while it is round at its other end and is secured to the plate 17 preferably by screw threads 22, a suitable here being provided in the plate which bore is a continuation of bore 23 in the jaw 15. It is clear that the punch tapers from its upper round attaching end to its lower cutting end, is hollow throughout, and communicates with the bore Thus material cut by the punch is forced up through the latter and out through the bore 23.
The upper side of jaw 15 carries a spring retainer 2% secured at one end only by a screw the other end overlapping the jaw and being left free for slight movement. The resilient retainer or latch 24- has a large hole 26 over the bore 23 so as to allow cuttings to pass freely out from the latter. Downwardly extending arms 27 are formed integrally with the retainer. These arms lie close beside the jaw edges and overlap the edges of the plate 17 thus preventing swinging of the latter except when the latching arms 2? are lifted clear of the plate. This is easily done by pulling up the outer end of the retainer 24 with the thumb.
The manner in which the invention is used is simple. The animals ear is put between the jaws with the parts disposed as Fig. 2 shows, and the pliers are squeezed shut. The sharp edge of the punch cuts a hole in the ear, the cartilage passing up through the punch and ultimately out through the The block is at the extreme end of the swing able plate with the result that it overhangs the opposite jaw to some extent, which is an advantage when clenching. The plate is so mounted as to give a maximum reach for cutting the hole and more than enough room when reversed to permit clamping of the tag without the cutting element uselessly mutilating the ear. The ears cannot be pinched when the tags are applied because a 3 the clenching element is brought to a stop with a considerable space between it and the jaw. In combination pliers, a pair of jaws, a plate pivoted to one of said jaws, a punch provided at one end of the plate, a clenching element at the other end of the plate, and a second plate fixed flat upon the other jaw, said punch encountering said second plate when swung into working position and encountering the opposite jaw when the clenching element is in working position, upon the closing of the jaws.

In combination pliers, a pair of jaws, a plate pivoted to one of said jaws, a punch and clenching element each secured to the plate at opposite ends thereof, said punch and clenching element being presented alternately at the outer end of the pliers when the plate is swung on its pivot, the relative positions of the punch and clenching element being such that when the punch is in working position it will be wholly comprehended between the two jaws, while when the clenching element is in working position it will lie partly between said jaws and partly beyond the outer edge of that jaw which holds the plate.
3, In combination pliers, a pair of jaws,
a plate pivoted to one of said jaws, a punch provided at one end of the plate, and a clenching element at the other end of the plate, saidpunch having a greater length than the clenching element whereby it serves as a stop to limit the closing movement of the jaws.
4:. In combination pliers, a pair ofjaws, a plate pivoted between its ends to one of said jaws, a punch and a clenching element secured to the plate at opposite ends thereof,
said punch and clenching element being presented alternately at the outer end of the pliers when the plate is swung on its pivot, said punch having a greater length than the clenching element so as to meet the lower jaw, whatever the position of the punch, wlth a space between the clenching element and said i aw.
5. In combination pliers, a pair of jaws, a plate pivoted to one of said jaws, a clenching element and a punch secured to said plate, said clenching element lying in part beyond the outer edge of the jaw upon which it is mounted when the plate is swung to present the clenching element in working position.
6. In combination pliers, a pair of jaws, a plate pivoted to one of said jaws, a clenching element and a punch secured to said plate, said punch being hollow and having a uniform taper from a large circular end screwed into said plate to a small end having a beveled cutting edge, said cutting edge having the form of a flattened ellipse, whereby it cuts holes in an animals ear of a corresponding shape.
7 In combination pliers, a pair of jaws, a plate pivoted to one of said jaws, a clenching element and a punch secured to said plate, said punch being hollow and tapered with its large end screwed into said plate, and its small end having a beveled elongated cutting edge, said clenching element consisting of a block having a flat working face, said punch having a greater length than the clenching element so as to meetthe lower jaw,-whatever the position of: the punch, with a space between the clenching element and said jaw.
8. In combination pliers, a pair of jaws, a plate pivoted to one of said jaws, a punch provided at one end of the plate, and a clenching element at the other end of the plate, and latching means for the plate, said means comprising a resilient member secured at one end to the jaw and overlapping the outer end thereof and having arms extending downwardly to engage with the edges of the plate.
9. In combination pliers, a pair of jaws, a plate swingably mounted on one of said jaws, a clenching element and a hollow punch fixed to said plate, a bore in the plateholding jaw forming an outlet for the cuttings passing up from the hollow punch, and latching means for the plate secured to said jaw, said means being provided with a passageway over the bore for said cuttings.

In combination pliers, a pair of jaws, a plate pivoted to one of said jaws, a punch provided at one end of the plate, a clenching element atv the other end of the plate, the relative positions of the punch and clenching element being such that when the punch is in working position it will be wholly comprehended between the two jaws,
while when the clenching element is in working position, it will lie partly between said jaws and partly beyond the outer edge of that jaw which holds the plate, and a second plate fixed fiat upon the second jaw,the said punch encountering the said second plate when swung into working position, and encountering the opposite jaw when the clenching element is in working position.
11. In combination pliers, a pair of jaws, a plate pivoted to one of said jaws, a punch provided at one end of the plate, a clenching element at the other end of the plate, the relative positions of the punch and clenching element being such that when the punch is in working position, it will be wholly comprehended between the two jaws, while when the clenching element is in working position, it will lie partly between said jaws,
and partly beyond the outer edge of that jaw which holds the plate, a second plate fixed flat upon the second jaw, the said punch encountering the said second plate when swung into working position and encountering the opposite jaw when the clenching element is in working position, a latching means for the plate, said latching means comprehending a resilient member secured at one end of the jaw which holds the plate and overlapping the outer end thereof, and having arms extending downwardly to engage with the edge of the plate.
