Description
(No Model.)
' B. L. FLETCHER.
PIRE MAT.
Patented Aug'. 29, 1893.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN FLETCHER, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE FLETCHER FIRE MAT COMPANY, OF NEWPORT, KENTUCKY.
FIRE-MAT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 504,156, dated August 29, 1893. Application liled January 11, 1893. Serial No. 458.016. (No model.)
.To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, BENJAMIN L. FLETCHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Cincinnati, in Hamilton county and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Mats, of which the following is a specication.
My improved mat is simple in construction, cheap of manufacture and eiicient in use. It is made of a non heat conducting substance such as asbestus covered on one or both sides by a het conducting substance, such as sheet iron filled with small holes or slots.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification Figure l is a view in elevation of my improved Iire mat; Fig. 2 a central cross section of the mat shown in Fig. 1. Figs. 3 and 4. are central cross sections of fire mats showing modified forms of the mat.
The mat is preferably made annular in form. It is composed ofl an asbgstigsJi-SILA, covered on one or both sides by a punctured metal disk B. The disks A and B. are firmly held together and in juxtaposition by a rim or band C.
D represents a ring attached to the rim C as shown, by which the mat can be taken off the stove or ire and hung up. This rim or band C. can be made separate or be a part of the disk as shown in the modified form in Fig. 3. In Fig. 4. two punctured disks are shown one on each side of the asbestus disk A held together by a rim C.
I prefer to make the mat as shown in Fig. l. Any kind ofrnon heat conducting substance may be used to form the disk A.
The matis placed on the fire of a gasoline or gas stove or the holes of an ordinary stove or range, the perforated disk being placed next 4o to the fire. The utensil holding the matter to be cooked or boiled is placed on the asbestus disk 'and the asbestus being a non conductor of heat only enough heat is transmitv ted to properly boil or cook the contents of the vessel or utensil resting upon the mat. Consequently it is not necessary to stir the contents'- to prevent burning. Burning is therefore prevented.
I can make the mat hexagon, rectangular, 5o square, or in any other form or contour. I may use any kind of non-heat conducting substance.
The punctured disk maybe attached to the asbestus in any desired manner.
What I claim as new and of my invention, and desire toA secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A fire mat composed of a disk of asbestus covered with a perforated disk of heat conducting substance as set forth.
2. In a iire mat, the combination of asbestus A, sheet metal B, rim C,themetal disk B, being perforated as shown and described.
BENJ. L. FLETCHER.
