Description

J. H.ADAMS. THILL SUPPORT.
(No Model.)
No. 504,146. Patented Aug. 29, 1393.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIcE.
JOHN H. ADAMS, OF DEERING, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, AND EDWARD H. LOOKE, OF PORTLAND, MAINE.
THlLL-SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 504,146, dated August 29, 1893.
Application filed October '7, 1892. Serial No. 448,104.. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. ADAMS, of Deering, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thin-Supports; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enableothers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1, is an isometric view of a wagon showing my improved thill supporter in position. Fig. 2, is a view of my improved supporter having the inclined set-off adjustable longitudinally on the tongue having the end of the tongue curved downwardly. Fig. 3, is a view of supporter having the inclined setoff curved instead of straight and having a lug projecting laterally from the side for use on carriages which do not have a fifth wheel.
My invention relates to improvements in thill supporters and is designed to support the thills in a raised position.
It consists of a long tongue adapted to be inserted under the fifth wheel or perch and rest upon the spring or rocker-bar and an inclined set-off attached to said tongue against which the cross-bar of the thills rests when the supporter is in position.
It further consists in making said inclined I set-off adjustable on said tongue and in certain other details of construction hereinafter more fully described.-
In said drawings a represents a carriage body, I) the forward axle, c the forward spring, 01 the fifth Wheel and e the perch. The carriage supporter consists of. a long tongue f adapted to be inserted under the fifth wheel and rest upon the spring and an inclined set-off g on its top face against which the cross-bar h of the thills is designed to rest. When the carriage has no fifth wheel a lateral set-off or lug h is attached to the side of the tongue adapted to be placed under the perch and be held thereby. The inclined setoff may be attached to the tongue in any suitable manner a variety of which is shown in Figs. 2 and 3. It may be strengthened by lateral braces as shown in Fig. 2, or by the perpendicular brace between the back of the inclined set OE and the tongue as shown in Fig. 3. in Fig. 2, or it may be curved slightly as shown in Fig. 3. Instead of the set-0E being rigidly secured to the ton gueit maybe adapted to slide thereon as shown in Fig. 2, in which the set ofi is attached to the shoe 7: adapted to slide on the upper face of saidtongue and said shoe having a loop j passing around the tongue and a thumb screw is passing through said loop and adapted to hold the set-off in any desired position on the tongue.
The advantages of the present invention are that it supports the thills from a point at or near the center of the cross-bar, that it is an absolutely sure support, that it is easily put in position is cheap and durable and does not scar or injure any part of the carriage.
Having thus described my invention and its use, what I claim is-- 1. In a thill supporter, the combination witha long tongue, of an inclined set off extending from the top of said tongue, upward,
substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a thill supporter the combination with a long tongue of an inclined set-off adjustable longitudinally on said tongue, as and for the purposes set forth.
3. In a thill supporter the combination with a long tongue having one end curving slightly of an inclined set-off on the other end, as and for the purposes set forth.
4. The combination with a thill supporter having a long tongue and a lateral set-off or lug on the end thereof, of a vertically inclined set-off at the other end, as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN H. ADAMS. Witnesses:
ELGIN O. VERRILL, NATHAN CLIFFORD.
